I want to update my iMac, I'm currently on 10.9.2, but I don't want to cause any problems with my software, apps, plugins, etc.

    Using Logic Pro 9 & X,
    Live 9
    Lots of Native Instruments plugins,
    Roland SH-101, Promars, Sh2,
    The list goes on.

Anyone updated and going well with it?

Anything fine here so far, but that depends on what you use...
Just make a backup and you should be save.

Using 10.11.3 with Logic Pro X 10.2.1 and tons of Plug-Ins.
    Working like a charm :)

Yeah I'm just backing up via Time Machine now. Was 50GB into the backup and i accidentally clicked "eject" instead of 'Get Info' on my external drive:sad:

Re-doing it now. Hope El Capitan doesnt take a long time to download and install:unsure:

You could also try to create a clone with SuperSuper or CarbonCopyCloner.
A clone is even bootable via USB , so you have anytime a running System.

Also running 10.11.3 and Logic X 10.2.1 and Logic 9 with tons of plugs including a bunch of Native Instruments stuff and the Roland synths. Quite happy with it.

I'll also second the comment about creating a bootable clone via an app like SuperDuper. I always have two bootable clones of my system on external drives - one of which is stored off-site (mom's house!).

Been recommend to use either of those two. will look into it, already backed up via time machine though.

Really don't know what to do regarding updating to El Cap.... Some people saying not to do it, and then others saying that it's fine ...

Really unsure. I've heard it's made some peoples macs faster and Logic runs better, and I would like to update it, I think the UI looks nicer, but I don't want to risk causing loads of problems..

ABSOLUTELY clone your current working system drive (I recommend CCC because it also backs up the "recovery partition), although I like SuperDuper too), you can get 1tb spinners for like 35$, best money you will never regret spending...then you can alway roll back if things aren't working

Really can't afford anything at the moment, skint. Is Time Machine not good enough? So that I'f El Capitan causes issues, I can just revert right back to how my mac was when I backed it up (yesterday).

I'm downloading a trial of CCC, can i fully back up and restore with that? It's a 3 day trial, and i'll know if I need to revert back well before 30 days lol.

UPDATE: It's saying I need to partition my external drive, and it will erase everything on it first. I dont have another drive to back that up on to./ It's a 1TB drive and i have like 150GB left.

I need to get another external HD specifically for back ups.

Should I really not go ahead with El Cap until i use CCC? Is Time Machine back up not enough!?

I wouldn't freakymofo.... I have been dealing with Mac OS updates since inception... ALWAYS have a rollback option. I know $35 bucks may be untenable, but you will want to kill yourself if the update bonks what you are working on/ or your working system. I would NEVER update to a new OS without having a backup of my WORKING system...... it's just asking for problems...

If you want to upgrade you have to disable SIP and FILEVAULT, and then you should not have compatibility problems with any plugin (sorry for bad english)

I made the classic rookie mistake of upgrading from Lion to El Capitan without doing a Time Machine backup first. I'd also just bought a MB Pro and yanked the hard drive from my old MacBook and just stuck it in the new machine, so a lot of my software wasn't properly authorized before the upgrade. I immediately lost Pro Tools 10.3.9 and a bunch of my plugs went wonky. After a couple of weeks of trying to make things work with El Capitan, I was forced to wipe my drive and go back to Lion, basically starting all over again.

Make a Time Machine backup of your current drive. No need for CCC or any other cloning software -- the results will pretty much be the same. After my El Capitan fiasco, I was going to snag a 1TB drive and an enclosure, but I stumbled over a decent Seagate USB 2.0/3.0 backup drive at Best Buy for $57 that was specifically built for this purpose. It even matches my MB Pro.

After having gone through this process (and harboring a deep hatred for El Capitan), I've gotten a little bit more objective about it. Unless you're talking about Pro Tools 10, if something is working for you in Mavericks, it will almost definitely continue working for you in El Capitan. The main problem you'd experience would be having to reauthorize or reinstall older software, which is where I got tripped up. Older software won't install or reauthorize properly in more than a few cases, whether SIP is disabled or not. Anything you can upgrade for El Capitan, make sure you have the installers for. So, as long as everything you want is on your machine and running at full capacity before upgrading (and you do a complete Time Machine backup beforehand), you probably won't experience any problems. And once you upgrade and verify that all your stuff is running the way it's supposed to, immediately do another Time Machine backup, just to make sure you don't have to reinstall your older stuff in case something gets accidentally erased. I'll probably venture back in myself, once I get a more recent copy of PT.

It's really you and your luck. some have a great experience but i've seen lots of complains as well. to me apple is playing the programmed obsolescence card. i know that this comment won't help you make a choice. so to sum it, if your machine ain't that recent, play the safe card and ignore el capitan to enjoy your computer's performances. if you're not depending on performances then go el capitan ;)

    Thanks for the replies, guys.

I've updated to El Capitan and have not had 1 single problem, at all.
Everything runs fine, haven't had to update anything, expect for Logic Pro X to the latest, which was my choice.

But of course i did do a Time Machine back up beforehand just in case
