In your opinion what are some awesome tricks and/or VST's to throw on the master to spice up your productions. I'm new and was just wondering what you guys use for this? Gross beat can be pretty cool to create vinyl cutting fx and used for fills here and there. Any ideas appreciated:wink:

I like to keep it simple, I try to get what i want in the mix and then just Polish that in the Master Buss. Im using Cubase and for a long time just used the standard Steinberg plug ins. Multi band compressor > Studio EQ > Maximiser and then UV22hr for dithering post fader. they have good presets as a starting point that only require small adjustment to get it where you want to be and very straight forward controls.
my Master effects chain at the moment is Fabfilter Pro MB > The Glue > waves EMO Q4 eq > Steinberg Maximiser > Waves NX1 speaker emulation for head phones ( only at night so i don't piss off my neighbours) > UV22HR for dithering when mixing down to MP3 or 24 bit wav I always record in 32bit float 44,100 Mhz. regardless of what daw you are on as you are new i highly recommend getting a copy of Ask.Video.Cubase.7.5.302.Mastering.Toolbox.TUTORiAL, while it is specific to cubase the info will translate to just about any daw really. its a really great starting point. Im sure Ask Video makes a Mastering toolbox tutorial for most major Daw though. it also explains what each plug in in the chain is doing which translates to any plug in you'll use

    Hope that helps

if you want to go creative on your master try sugar bytes effectrix or looperator. or if you are using a mac give anything by sinevibes a go. maybe check out tantra by dmitry sches too

like gross beat, these can be really heavy handed- so use them sparingly

if you want more subtle moves then try lowering master volume or stereo width in certain sections, so that the main part of your song has real impact when it comes back in.
