When running any effect, but more noticeably a delay, it seems as if.. 'before'.. when i pressed stop in my DAW (Live 8) that if there was a delay on a track, it would not keep going after I pressed stop.

Shouldn't all audio stop when stop is pressed?

Maybe I'm losing my mind, but it seems to me that months back when i pressed stop, everything stopped.. now, I am getting delay feedback going on, and on, and on.. until the level of feedback i have it set to finishes.

The only thing I have changed.. is my soundcard.. and Im pretty sure there are no settings in Live that control this, but.. when i press stop, i want ALL audio to stop.. and not have to wait for the delays, or reverb trails to end.

Any ideas folks? I'm probably overlooking something remarkably simple knowing me..

 

Hey One Reason. As far as I know, it is completely normal for the delay to keep going after you press stop. When you insert something like a delay or reverb, the decay of the last thing you fed it will continue for whatever "length" it was set to in your plugin. That's always how Live and every other DAW has behaved for me. I don't think you're going crazy.

 

I thought maybe I was loosing my mind, einfach, when I read what you wrote. So I went to Audition, cranked the verb way up on the snare, and when I hit stop, all audio stops. One reason, are you running effects through an external host with something like rewire, or something like that? Two different sound cards running, maybe? I don't know.---Well, I guess it doesn't hurt anything, but if it didn't do it before and now it does, I can see how that might bug me, just because. ha ha. And when it comes to losing my mind, you have to have something before you can lose it.

 

I'm just running, for example.. Live's native ping pong delay plugin on a normal audio \ vocal track.

Its going to be the most noticable using a delay with say a 1/4 note repeat...

I gotta say tho, im almost positive in the past, it didnt behave this way.

 

I've never used Audition, but with Pro Tools, Live, or Logic it would be expected behavior for the effect to finish its decay. When you stop your audio, the delay/reverb does stop too. You are just hearing it finish its decay. I guess others can chime in and share their results.

 

what you say makes sense enifach, the problem i have with it, is when i am bouncing back and forth, listening to an area of a track, then clicking back on the timeline to listen to it while tweaking something, I am hearing the delay tails from the previous play as the new one starts....

maybe im just trying to work too quickly?

 

How high do you have the feedback setting on the delay? If you have the feedback set really high, then it would make sense that you are still hearing it.

There is also a stop all clips button that is mappable... at least thats what i am reading here ;D

And yes, it happens. But, if you double(or triple) click the stop button, sometimes (most) it stops even the audio that is still being outputed from the effect, in this case, the delay.

And if you're playing and click to another location, the delay does mix the signal that have been sent to it and the one that is sending now into it. And that's normal.
One way you can avoid that is, if you're sure that you won't change anymore the sound that is being delayed, you can add one audio track and set it to resample, solo the channel that has the delay, click record and hit play. Once the track has finished play, you'll have the audio of the track with delay and now, you can click freely in whatever position you want of the track, the delay has been 'rendered' to an audio file.
Of course, it's not the most comfortable way of working, but at least you won't get mixed different parts of your song on the delay.

I'd suggest you to double click the stop button and then set the cursor to another location and click play, instead of simply clicking on another location while playing.

Open live and check your Mixer (if you have PC), I had a very similar problem and it was two sound devices playing at the same time but at a delay. I ended up having to update my main driver and it stopped. Just a wild guess

 

well.. while playing a track in live, if i click the stop button once, audio stops, but reverb tail and delay keeps fading out.. if i hit the stop button many times (5 or 6), all sound coming from live stops..
I dont know if this is the same thing that happens to you, but I hope you could fix this problem ;)

btw im using laptop crappy built in soundcard :P
