Yes, but they are high quality  I would rather change cables than accept lower quality components. Just remember when it comes to audio applications, sound quality is everything. YMMV, but with the Audient you will be at, or close to pro level audio. BTW you can also expand it to 10 inputs later, if and when money allows.

Do you think the pre amps are good? I used to have a Yamaha i88x and it's pre amps were good, my focus rite pre amps are good also.

@statik @fraifikmushi @Bunford : The earlier NI interfaces were criticized negatively by a lot of peeps because they had no balanced outs and no mic pre-amps. NI came back with Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6 and it fulfills pretty much every role. At 229 euros http://www.thomann.de/gr/native_instruments_komplete_audio_6.htm it's a steal. You can find better pres if you go up the ladder in price or go second hand. At this price range it's the best card atm imho. And i would humbly suggest in getting a new card. The minimum 2 years warranty is something ppl forget ,because all the used stuff in e-bay and elsewhere is so tempting heheh. The Steinberg UR28M is also a good bet, it has slightly better pres, about half a millisecond better latency ( both cards were bought with systems i built for clients, and i have tested them thoroughly ) and a sleeker interface at the cost of being about 50% more expensive at 315 euros http://www.thomann.de/gr/steinberg_ur28m.htm
    Cheers

I almost recommended it heheh as an alternative to the Audient. (It's way more expensive and most probably out of the thread's starter budget). The Audient has excellent pres but no midi or hardware input metering

I think I am starting to lean towards this one. Has the ins and outs i need and having the digital out also leaves me with the option of buying the Focusrite VRM, which i'm considering. I generally make music in headphones so trying to work out if the VRM is a gimmick or not at the moment. However, picking one up cheap off ebay, hooking the digital out of the Komplete 6 into it would be a neat setup to give me ins and outs i need and then be able to reference in different simulated environments.

Neither of these are deal breakers. You can interface midi via USB, and I also prefer to set my input gain using the VUMT meter plugin. (SPL Crimson user here)

@Zenarcist My friend, the dude said he has two hardware synths. You are already suggesting a card out of his price range (around 400 eu str.price) and now you are suggesting he should get a midi interface too hehe. Plus he mentioned he needs 4 inputs. Yes the Audient card sounds better. If this was a "which is the best card with 2ins whatsoever" it would be a strong contender (among others of course). Forgive me, but i find the generic audiophile talk (which i really like otherwise) out of topic .
    Be well

Actually I suggested the iD14 @ £149 which is within his price range!

Von_Steyr mentioned the iD22, I just added that they are doing a trade-in deal (£269) for information purposes, as other people also read these threads.

Regarding USB to midi I use a cable that cost 3 eu. I also have more synths than inputs, what's the problem with switching a cable? It takes all of one second :) And finally I live my life by one adage - buy cheap, buy twice

Anyway, when it comes to making decisions more information is better. It's like finding a new girlfriend, you go for what you can afford but it does no harm to look at all the other options

Zenarcist, i'm reading everything you are saying in agreement lol. You've earned my respect! haha. Nice taste in gear too . To the OP, I agree, you should strongly consider the
iD14. I hear the sound quality is excellent as well.

I'm in the same boat! I've been using a TC Electronics' Konnekt 24D since 2008, when they were still relevant. It's always been a bit hiccup-y re: the FW connection, and then, one of the two ports went out on it a couple of years ago. I contacted TC, who told me that they no longer made the 24D and suggested I buy an IMPACT Twin (which they also no longer make). It's a shame, since the Konnekt line had great pres and a couple of them, like the 24D, sported powered plugs (in the case of the 24D, it was Fabrik R, a reverb, and Fabrik C, a compressor). For now, TC still makes drivers and control software that appear to be compatible all the way up to El Capitan/Windoze 10 and work in 64-bit, but they offer zero hardware support, and I'm sure it's just a matter of time before they stop updating the drivers. I'd considered buying a mint replacement off of eBay, where they go for about $300, but it just seems like I'm throwing money at dead technology.

I also have zero interest in getting an el cheapo replacement interface -- not that there's anything wrong with that! -- since I'd like to be able to use whatever I buy in a professional capacity until I can afford a 100 percent pro rig. Idealistically, I eventually want to get an Antelope Orion 32 and a Zen Studio (for mobile recording), but at between $2,500-$3,000 a pop, it'll be a while before I can afford either one. It seems like the cheapest option for me right now is something like a MOTU 828 MkIII Hybrid or an 828x, which hovers around $700-$800 at the cheapest (I've found used models that go a lot cheaper, but all of them seem like they need a lot of repair work done on them). I'd probably go with the Hybrid, since that uses either FW or USB and I'd like to keep the sole TB port on my MB Pro open for video output. The new MOTU TB interfaces are pretty intriguing, especially since you can expand the system with Ethernet cables, but those are around $1,500 apiece, and I'd like to keep the price around $800. I've also considered the ol' Avid MPro, which is about a grand, but has four press and comes bundled with Pro Tools.
