Legally, it's no different than having a regular camera; the same privacy and consent laws apply.

 

Will you go to someone's house? You need a "warrant" for that, lol I guess, I'm not sure at all, put house can't be considered a public place, hence you need a permission to film inside.
Will you try to entrap someone? There are laws against entrapment, for example if you insist on selling me drugs or guns, I'm not to blame if I will buy it from you, because you were bating/pushing me and that's considered entrapment, I have to initialize it myself to be blamed for it.

I'm renting a room for years and ofcourse it's good to know if somebody enters my room agent/landlord who the hell knows who.
My audio gear is in my room my PC worth over £2000 ofcourse I want to know while I'm at work is somebody checking my room.

 

In my country, (the netherlands) it's perfectly legal to use a hidden camera.
The only legal boundry beeing, mounting a camera in a public space.

one can play with that, by letting it film the public space without mounting it directly to its surface.

Yes. And ethical ones too.

In plenty of jurisdictions it is, quite rightly, a crime to record people without obtaining their consent. You could very easily be breaking numerous laws by using such a camera anywhere, anytime. Depending on place and circumstance.

And ethically.........just try telling a friend that you secretly recorded your last conversations with them. Check their response.

The one simple question is, as Saint already asked, what do you intend to use it for? I don't wish to know, but that would tell you everything. Using a camera to guard your property as someone suggested is a very reasonable use. Are there other reasonable uses? Wildlife photography, perhaps? Someone is trying to involve you in a crime, through blackmail or coercion? The "reasonable use" scenarios are pretty limited?

Develop a spy cam, call it AlexaCam, let an experienced lawyer write some legal blabla and let the user agree to it before use.
Perfectly legal in most cases/countries.
What's surprising is that while filming people secretly without their consent is seen as a crime (and rightly so), many of them don't hesitate to agree to a legal text that basically approves the collector of the audio and video material to use it for lots of different purposes if they're presented just one good reason to justify that.

The best remedy is education.
