My original song was deleted off soundcloud because the vocalist got pissed at me.

So last year I produced a house track that took me 6 weeks to create, a vocalist then contacted me and she ended up recording vocals in a physical studio. The song was great with the lyrics she wrote (even though her voice was not very good) her lyrical writing was on point. So eventually we had a falling out because I write a lot of trap and EDM music and the song she sang over was more kygo ish (laid back) and i think she didn't like that she was associated with someone who also makes dubstep and harder stuff etc. So Honestly I liked the song with the vocals but didn't like her so I blocked her on soundcloud, and earlier this week she contacted me saying that if I didn't credit her she would delete the song off soundcloud. Literally within 10 minutes after that my song was deleted.. That was one of my only good originals :( How can someone who sang over my track for a few hours get to claim ownership of a track that took me 6 weeks to create:suicide:

Copyright is divided into two sections: composition and lyrics. Although you have written the song for the average part, her vocal melody is considered the main melody for the song, so she can claim both composition and lyrics in her copyright claim against you. That is how it is settled and agreed in the Law. Besides that there are the Neighboring rights, her performance on your song which also give her a right to decide what can and can not be done with her performance. You should have gotten into how things are legally settled prior to dissing her with that block, not a very mature thing to do and certainly not a very wise thing either. You haven't got a leg to stand on unless you erase the vocals from the track and won't make use of the lyrics nor the vocal melody in any future version.:disco:

Always, always, always take the time to apply for a membership of any performing rights organization.(Ascap,BMI,Sesac,etc...) before uploading material to the internet.
Always copyright your songs before putting them out into the world as well, especially if you spent so much time on those songs.

You should have written a "Work For Hire" agreement up but since you didn't... she has more rights to that track than you do because (as mentioned before) lyrics and vocal melody/performance carry more weight than just music production.
It behooves you to know and understand the music business and the law that applies to it and put your ego aside. Producers are a "dime-a-dozen" and 95% just suck, don't know what they're doing and cause problems for the rest of us.

Just so you know this... if she applies for a copyright on the song (and you haven't)... it will be hers.

    Moral of this story is:

Just because you own a laptop, some samples, a DAW and a keyboard and paste together tracks doesn't qualify you as a producer. You need to learn the other 95% of the business now. You've just proven to us, that you're a hobbyist with a lot to learn.

Long story short: give credit and put something into writing.

I go back to my stuff a lot and you know what I've figured after time? Everything can be done better than it's done. Today it sounds fucking awesome, month or two later I'm like what was I thinking? Why I didn't or why I did, bla bla bla. Suddenly I have this "Oh, now I see the truth!" moment. But for whatever fucking reason, I couldn't see it back then. I so much wish I could. It happens because we learn and it's a fucking trial and error experience, sadly. So if you think that girl's stuff is "be all, end all" kinda thing, you're mistaken. You're simply under the influence right now. But you know what? You can top her game. Somebody can top her game, whatever. So I would say, fuck the bitch, have the upper hand, keep your track, she can't claim the music she didn't write, find a new girl, but next time would you fucking please copyright your fucking music first! Rant over, thank you very much.

All she asked for was the credit she was due, if you hadn't tried to that trick on her, you'd both be happy, live and learn

To the OP... if you take advice from these people, you get what you deserve.

You can't use the lyrics without the lyricist's consent as it is not your property regardless if you recorded it and possess the recording. You (and the lyricist) would have to have a signed agreement stipulating ownership of all negotiable rights... unless you want to end up in court over this stupidity.

Personally I would use what happened to you to create the lyrics for your next track. If written well you could have a hit all at her expense. That would be the way i would choose to get even.

What the FAK are you talking about? Of course you have to credit her if she actually performed the lyrics in the song. I dont get it? Seems perfectly fine to me it got taken down if you try to take credit for every little thing that you didnt do.

EDIT: So you had someone else sing her lyrics? Nothing changed, you should be ashamed for not crediting her. Do you know how many good producers and vocalists are completely unkown to the world because of things like this among others. Honesty is something we barely have left in the world.

Welcome to the wonderful world of moody artists seriously though always get some kind of contract signed even if its not for money for your creative control and for your rights to do with the song what you wish I have had a few artists try to take songs and run after I produce Mix and Mastered it all they did rite and stand there for 10 minutes in sing or rap yes they got credit for their vocals but I had control where it was played and also that they could Not make some crappy cell phone Misic video and post it on YouTube
