I'm getting tired of composing and playing everything myself. I feel like forming a virtual band and/or writing with others. Are there any good sites that you can recommend? Are there any problems with people 'stealing' your music?

Me too. I could use some lyrics and real guitar leads and parts. I am a lead and harmony singer, composer, pro drummer and percussion player/programmer. Also I have many years of producing and engineering experience. I am not really into just loops and rap beats though.

    Anyone interested?

You said my last piece of music was so bad that you wouldn't even to let your dog listen to it, unless he had done a poop LOL, so maybe I am not a good contender

It would be good if you could listen to peoples music and offer to collaborate with them. Maybe a short piece of the song up for collaboration would be a good thing too. I'm sure somebody has thought the whole thing through and set up a web site for it. It would be a bit like a dating site, matching musical taste and influences etc :bleh:

This is good idea. I am too tired producing everything myself. I am keyboard player and i working with music many years (1987). Maybe exchanging single tracks from services like "SOUNDCLOUD" or uploading tracks to share services and send link to others (on this forum). I found on this AudioSex forum some good people for making music and "burninstar" is interesting for dooing this stuff. F..k ACTA :)

Some years ago Myspace was perfect for that ! I met plenty of people and bands who I worked with. (Don't mention girls... :dancing:)

But now I feel it's not as huge as it was...

In France we have Audiofanzine.fr there's a lot of classified ads, but not sure international version of Audiofanzine is as full of people as ours.

Yep Soundcloud seems a good idea ! Anyway, my point is you can contact people anywhere you want when they post their music ! (Even if you're not sure if the person is searching for something, as long as you like his/her work, everything can happens ! lol)

But the fact is that I actually do everything myself because I'm tired of working with people who are not serious/dedicated enough, or don't know what they want, egomanics, or many other problems... I never met the "perfect co-worker(s)" so far ! (Or just for short terms)

The best way to work I found so far is doing everything myself (As demo), and then recording in a studio with friends who will do better than me on their own instruments (Especially drums...)
And then finding guys to tour ! (Or the same people as the recording session)

I did a new Myspace page, if someone is interested, we never know : http://www.myspace.com/julianleemartin (Still under construction)

Thank you for Kompoz.com Pudelko ;)

    Good luck everyone :mates:

I have a weird way of doing things that may be open to collaboration. I record small chunks of say 4, 8 or 16 bars very quickly (in less than 10 minutes), and I then file them away for later use. I don't pay much attention to the musicianship, as these are not songs. I'm basically looking for a riff, motif, tone, progression, melody or anything else that can inspire future creativity. My little snapshots can change a great deal after the 2nd and subsequent iterations, as they are only rough guide tracks.

I save all the sessions in Reaper, and sometimes I will try multiple compositions with the same tones and fx etc, so it can also be a kind of style template.

As an example here is this mornings solo jam episode .. http://media.soundcloud.com/stream/4FwSzenDufmi?

I play (mainly) acoustic guitar and I am interested in your idea, particularly as I find almost impossible to do drums programming.. At "soundcloud.com/moosegarage" you can hear what I do.
They are all my composition and everything is played, recorded, mixed and mastered by me (drums and strings are virtual, everything else is real instruments)..
If you think we're in the right musical frame of mind give me a buzz.

Same goes for anyone else interested.

This I like for a starter, I can here this in my head as kind of a funky full on song. great beginnings!

I had a band a long time ago, we would flat out jam for about 45 minutes at a time, record everything to cassette tape, turn the tape over and jam another 45.
I would listen to the tape, select a few different sections that I liked, we put them together in the studio that I worked at then. Then I wrote lyrics and did vocals on the spot, in the studio after basic tracks were recorded.

This led to a Album release, over the span of a year and a half we had completed 16 songs to choose from.

This is kinda the same method of composing as you are doing only without the computer. Big songs come from small musical ideas put together properly.

Are you using humanize/swing features on your drum tracks? You may find it useful to observe real drummers if you are struggling to program drums. There are a few good drum tutorial videos around, for instance Groove Essentials covers the basic techniques and rhythm patterns. You are also free to track live studio drums at a later time if your basic track timing is in good shape. I am currently experimenting with Roland TD3 electronic drums used in conjunction with Abbey Road Drummer, which is quite interesting as you have access to the midi data. Another topic to look into is drum replacement.

Have you listened to Anna Calvi before? She is a British songwriter who also has some flamenco influences, although she does play on a Fender Telecaster.

Thanks. I'd spent the weekend listening to some early Bowie, Joy Division, The Cure, Roxy Music (with Brian Eno) and Duran Duran! :)

I'll try and get some stems together. It was all done ITB. Off the top of my head I used Studio Drummer, Guitar Rig amps and FX, Revalver amps and cabs, Echo Boy, Lexicon, ImpOSCar, Crystallizer.

It's a simple riff in the key of G with a slight variation in the 2nd guitar part. Basically it's all based around an initial motif idea.

Wow you have a lot of very nice songs, with fantastic guitar work. I only listened to 6 of them, and enjoyed them all. I'll listen to more later. I did notice that they mostly all instrumentals though, is this by design or do you just not sing? Just wondering. Great work.

OK how do we make this happen?

If I put up a sound cloud version of a song in need of lead parts, would someone be able to download it, put it in a DAW, record a lead part, then maybe use a file sharing host for returning a wave stem at full quality. Is there a better way? How do other collaborative projects get things done?

Or, would we rather have all the stems available for recording the leads? I know sometimes it would be nice to have a MIDI file for tempo, or chord changes.

I know if I were doing drum replacement that a MIDI tempo file would help a lot. It would be required if the tempo changes through out a song.

Let's here some ideas. I have a song with all the rhythm tracks complete. Looking for lead parts and lyrics, totally flexible on which parts of the song to use for solos. Please select a section to play over and don't solo through the whole thing.

    http://soundcloud.com/burninstar/acc-ballad-bpm100-021912-08-37

Just putting this out there to see if it would work for a collaborative experiment. BPM 100 3 measures silence at the top. Please let me know if you would like to help.

I dunno, I've never done it before, it's equally exciting and scary at the same time :) Personally I would like the individual stems, so that I could have my own headphone mix and drop some parts in and out to create some space. A song sheet with chord changes would also be handy  Include whatever you think is useful .. This piece is in the key of C and no tempo changes right?

I don't see any problems with soloing in multiple parts on the track, as you can choose what parts you like and cut the rest, so it's actually more beneficial to yourself to have those choices when mixing.

Send any download links via PM

Hey "Zenarcist" this example is not bad in one moment remind me to something like JOY DIVISION. I work most like you (1035 unfinished songs on my HD). Im not working with loop only live playing.

For me it's the best way because the creativity window is only open for a short period of time. The main goal is to create a little spark, something that can generate further ideas ...

Before I did that last piece I was watching This Documentary. I recommend it if you like the Joy Division. Those guys took their music to another level, and have grown more influential over time

So what do you do with the 1035 unfinished songs?

That is correct. Key of C no tempo changes. I would not mind if people played through the whole song as long as there would be places to cut out the sections I need.

I once had a guitar player over to the home studio to play through the a track, he played constantly, in tune and in key, but with no direction. There was only a few places to edit and I had to use quick fades. I only used 1 repetitive part as a backing track.

That is why I think the parts would go together better if you played over only 1 section with a Lead in and lead out that would extend a little past the section. It would be ideal if I could have 1 stem that had solos over the B sections, another stem with solos over the C sections. This way each solo would have an entrance and exit making it gel better with the song and seem to have some direction.

You can download the stereo track from soundcloud, Go to listen on soundcloud link, then there is a little arrow pointing down, that is the download button.

Still wondering if it would be better to use a file share site to let people download all the stems?

let me know what you think.

I downloaded the stereo version earlier. It would be great to have the stems though  I always separate out the sections as that's how I build up a song. Playing the whole way through tends to lead to too many mistakes in my case, so I keep it modular. It's also less hassle to mix.
