OK, you are right. The location of this feature has changed since v. 7 (Asio Guard for streamin VST's).

    Thank you!

Let the TCP requests thru and "ending up in host-file" will help partially.
But Cubase then tries several proxies which are often essential.

Anyway, the mass requests looking like DDOS (of course its no DDOS-Attack), are always a sign of sluggish programmed network details.
Unfortunately this is a common behavior of some modern software (endless loop of requests after detecting internet).

A real smart solution would be to find a hack, preventing Cubase from detecting internet.

If someone knows a trick for that (without hex editor and reverse engineering/re-compiling), let us know!!!

I forgot some Steinberg-ec2 hosts yesterday, so my Cubase startup issue seems to be solved.
It was the TCP-fuck (mass requests).

Thank you guys. Together we are better geeks!

I think I found the problem.
First I unchecked ASIO Guard. Spectrasonics website recommends this but there is no VSTi tab where they say there is one. No change.
Then I unconnected the network cable for internet. No change. Still crashed at splash screen.
Third I changed interfaces. I was using Line 6 UX1 to plug in some headphones. I then changed to the Eleven Rack and all seems well.
I then changed again to the O1V96i and all still well (Yamaha and Steinberg are partners btw).
I think the drivers from Line 6 were updated before installing Cubase 8.5 and they are causing the issues.

    Thanks to all who replied.

Sounds good, glad you found the culprit!
Also,Yamaha bought Steinberg, they bought 100% of their common stock in 2005 for 28.5M.

If you on windows you can open regedit go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then choose Software then scroll down the menu and you will find a folder called Vst now open that and change the default Vst dir key
(most likely it will be C:/Program Files/Steinberg/Vst Plugins if you havent tweaked your system as i have and have my plugins on a different hardrive then C:
To anything you want i think you can leave it blank also..

If you on 64 bit system do the same in the Wov6432Node folder you find a Vst default folder in there also i normaly just named them C:/Plugins And C:Vst 64 Plugins

Then you can load the Daw of your choice and then in preferences or option or whatever it is called change the Vst folder to where your plugins is located and do a scan so you can see which plugins that is causing trouble..

BUT YOU NEED TO KNOW that if you gonna install a plugin that have an installer after that change it will be installed in those locations if you just click next next next (like so many people do) and not point to where you want it to be installed so you need to change back after you fix the Cubase problem

Also everyone should really know that some plugins change those reg keys Toontrack do so if you install their plugins to say "C:Vst Plugins/Toontrack" all other plugins you install after that will be installed in that folder if you click next next next so you need to change the reg key back to what is was before.
And some others Dev do the same i cant remember right which one "damn i am getting really old :)"
Some will simply change it to C:/VstPlugins even if it is a regkey there before that say that i have choosed for exampel D:Vst Plugins as my default vst folder normally it is the steinberg folder mention above that is the default folder..

I have mailed some of those dev:s and said thet they need to change their installer only one have responded and changed it that is MathAudio anf they did it with the next update applouse to that company
