Yes - 90125 remastered albums sound like shit, so mixing, mastering or preferable lack of the later does matter, lol. Music is dynamic, no dynamics equals shit, proven by those remastered versions.

I average finding about 1-2 GOOD songs a year at this point, and so far the best thing I have heard here was the
track by @midi-man , and someone said it needed mastering help. Yeah I like some electronic music, but I have yet
to hear one track, or producer that really stands out that much from what amateurs are doing.
Just showing my ignorance..or my age..or maybe both ! :guru:

I feel pretty confident in saying wanking around with only software and samples just doesn't cut it musically...(for me anyway )

Some homes are comfortable with fans and others with AC units. an unsurpassed amount of comfort can be had with both set at the right speed and temperature...

For context, the OP was referring to this video.

The OP took the brief little statement he made at the end completely out of context.
First of all its a Neve compressor he has on his mix buss, I think the 33609 to be exact.

He said he put it through to make it sound better, which is his opinion, didnt mention anything about hardware vs plugin.
    This is not mastering.

I have no idea how you got working ITB being a waste of time from that video.

You should watch Andrew Scheps Puremix videos. He went from mixing completely OTB and collecting a wall of gear, to mixing hybrid, to mixing completely ITB now. I'm not saying this is the right way to do it, but this is the other side of the argument.

One of the reason that the analog consol seems sound better is the summing.
In digital domain there are a lot of phase cancelation, that reduce stereo image and sound body.
You can attenuate this issue, with this plugin

What would lead to phase cancellation in the digital domain would result in serious phasing issues in the analog domain.
You have to operate diligently either way and no plugin in the world can save you if you don't record/mix/gain stage/produce properly.

  9. Fraifikmushi is absolutely correct, and though Sound Radix is great, it should not excuse you from being consciencious when recording from sources with microphones. There is lots of craft that imparts the nuance of what we perceive as wonderfulness within the art of recording, and there is a learning curve that should be joyfully embraced as part of the process of this art. Their are no shortcuts, and one needs to keep both an open mind and an ear to what can be gleaned from people who have dedicated lifetimes and love in this happy endeavor as well as from the recent artists, producers and developers of our tools . These new software tools are a godsend to help keep costs at bay and save us time while we work, and the marriage between both novel and the tried and true analogue of the past (plus the new inexpensive killer gear, from cutting edge, blissfully true to the source AD/DA units that do not cost an arm and a leg, to cost approachable "clones" of the hardware of our dreams) give us not the best of both worlds, but rather a new world in with both can play important roles to enable us to go where we all want to go, that place where we can be as good as we can be with the tools at our disposal.

    There's a saying among MEs:

The right setting on the plugin will always beat the wrong setting on the hardware.

FP don't master in that video and I'm not sure if he masters at all. In a video he is talking about how his label ask him to please put a limiter at least to avoid clipping because he doesn't care at all about that and even mention he even had 90db of clipping in some tracks. He shows his limiter working and it has a tremendous amount of reduction when the sound surpass the ceiling... he even call it better. So my intuition says he doesn't do the mastering of his records, he just squash the shit out of his tracks; if you reach back to flux pavillions carreer you'll hear this in practice where nothing... absolutely nothing is clean, it's all distorted.

Watch Grammy-engineer Andrew Scheps mix a song entirely on his Neve 8068 console with tons of analog outboard

Grammy-winning engineer Andrew Scheps mixes the song Fly Rasta by the amazing Ziggy Marley, this time using exclusively hardware equipment.

This is the way records used to be made and it is a truly exceptional learning opportunity for all aspiring producers and engineers.

In this 2-hour video Andrew Scheps mixes Ziggy Marley's song on his 2 analog Neve 80-series consoles explaining all his decisions, sharing his extensive rear bus parallel compression concept and using the best vintage gems from his world-famous wall of gear.

This video is a deep dive into the analog world, getting to the roots and origins of compression and equalization techniques and unveiling sometimes-forgotten workflows that will be truly inspiring to all engineers.

This video is the follow-up on the full mix of the same song, done entirely in-the-box.
Watch the video here, compare the two mixes then download the same tracks from Andrew's session and mix your own!

    Hardware used:

Console: Neve 8068 (x2) with Flying Faders
    EQ: Neve 33102, Lang EQs
    Dynamics: Urei 1176LN (Rev.D and Rev.A), dbx 160VU, Neve 2264, RCA BA6A, Spectrasonics 610, Chandler TG1
FX: Eventide H3000, Aphex II Studio Exciter, Aphex 204, SPL Transient Designer

But to be fair to FP.... I'm not sure anyone in the EDM field even cares about clipping

Is that supposed to contradict my comment?
Did you wonder why it said "this time"?
Because if you actually knew what you were talking about you'd know that in the puremix video he did before that one, he mixed the same song ITB.
He works completely ITB, and only did that as an instructional video.

Other than that, its a great video.

Here is what I do (and its a great solution for me btw) I just generate an awesome custom preset in AAMS (now free btw) by analyzing multi-million dollar mastered Hollywood True-HD movies and making clip out of a part that really sounds good. That way you can master at home in the box. Only thing is just make sure you have a good mix first and use a good close match preset in frequency spectrum and what the track really needs for eq/compression changes. I also am a firm believe to use litte to no eq or compression anywhere on the mix. i also am a major user of mathaudio auto eq and redline monitor together on the mixbus because i prefer to work on my hd-800s headphones over monitors. i love the detail of headphones. All completely In The Box.

think my sound will suck? you be the judge each on of my tracks is mixed using those above methods. Example :

  18. LOL, I listened to your embedded song before I read what you described as your method of mixing, and honestly and truly thought it sounded like that boomy and overly emotional hit to the chest kind of recipe that we hear at the cinema, like a movie soundtrack kind of sounds. I don't feel that you are doing yourself any favors by plotting your work this way. This technique might seem like a good, fast and sure way to find a path to the end of a piece, but it seems obvious to my sensibilities that each song has it's own unique needs that beg to be addressed within the context of the individual song itself, and I believe that you owe it to yourself to learn how to reference tracks without resorting to cookie cutter methods such as this, so that your obvious talent as a musician can flourish and consistently be truly unique.

i never made any claims just posted a link to the O T B mix video from the engineer you suggested to watch, with its description... merely to compare the two. understand dialogue in its context. the op question is priority.
