    the classic
    2-5-1-6
    or the
1-6-2-5-1 (no roots; ref. to Autumn Leaves)

for rainy days it comes to me instantly; even before I place my fingers on the keys
...or sometimes Riders on the storm if I am on the Rhodes

On a Guitar, any starting with a 9th. chord brings me into the "rainy day" mood

For a change during a chorus, I'll maybe use:
    iii iv7 IVsus Isus
    III iv7 ii7 #V6 V

Just in case I goofed the nomenclature:
    i.e.
    C#min F#min7 Dsus4 Asus4
    C#7 F#min7 Bmin7 F6 E A

It moves nicely and doesn't sound too overused and you can add/subtract maj 7ths and 9ths to taste
