Problem with melodies...

    Hi guys,
    I have been producing for few years now, but i'm still unable to make good melodies, a melody that i can get excited for and i can remember.
    I studied a lot of melody ( i'm producing progressive house ) they're so simple and repetitive but when i try to make some melodies the result is nothing, i can't come up with a good melody and i forget my melodies the day after.
    I have some questions
    Do you have any suggestion ? Do you have the melody in your head or you just play with the piano roll ? do you remember your melodies ?

    I find it that I enjoy better the melodies I hummed and then orchestrate than the ones I built around existing chord progressions. When I don't have inspiration (when the melody just doesn't appear out of nowhere in my head) I find that basic music theory helps. A simple short motif/melody and then expanding on it. hope that helps

    Maybe you should listen more to soundtracks / classical music, you have to enjoy it and it can be a real source of inspiration, for my part it is :)

    practice practice, rome wasnt build in a day.
    lets say you practice everyday 2 hours to write melodies with your controller and a piano lib or plugin loaded.
    imagine you do that for 365day, at the end of the year you wrote over 730 hours melodies, imagine the potential you hold, imagine that you maybe used almost of keys, imagine how much your mind dealt with the scales in that?

    sure its hard, but you will see results after 2-3 weeks of daily practice.

    you need another ingredient, to not rate your work over the long time, it wont improve over a few weeks that much.
    there is a 10000 hours for everything. i think Malcom Gladwell wrote a book about it about how people exploited the fact of 10000 hours on something, maybe this will open your eyes?

    true dat, hooktheory! also, band in a box will generate melody parts and chord progressions if needed. great for fresh ideas.

    Thanks for this! it really opened my mind too! I did what I haven't done in a long time, sit in front of my Desktop just to focus on writing melodies regardless they were "good" or not. I've been practicing for 2 days and so far the results are amazing. I started with the key of A and I already have one or two tracks to work with but will continue with the practice till I am done with every Key in the piano roll. really inspiring! and I've been reading the book too.
