If you want Firefox without some of the idiotic shit they added
    try Pale Moon
it is still gecko (like mozilla )but striped and healthier, with a recomended addons list
    curated by the developers.

you stil can use all your addons(from firefox) but if you are carefull you have a slick ff without the memory leaks and quite "safe"

but i use different browsers for different tasks

I agree about the RAM usage, but 1-4% for a security feature is really negligible, with OSX users of Firefox taking the worst performance hit: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=W-XOR-E-Firefox

Quote: "3% performance hit in the javascript engine. Web performance is constrained by the speed of DOM API, GPU acceleration and optimization of rendering pipelines. Faster js engine is helpful, but rarely critical."

hmmm I think for me it's how chrome splits up its events into seperate processes that bogs down the slower systems I've had to work on... I haven't seen firefox do this while analysing the task manager...

Anyway, it's only a big deal when having to deal with office computers, otherwise it is negligible. But I found from the way I've setup my browser experience firefox is handling the processes much smoother. Chrome hangs for a little which is time consuming at times and annoying cuz it sometimes glitches out, at least with the way I've set things up...

I have also noticed though that firefox handles certain video players much more poorly than chrome... but this probably varies and changes from player to player not exactly sure on that...

but firefox is the way to go for me right now with the shittier systems I have to deal with...

late coming, feeling to be compelled to reiterate even if both choices are mentioned already, just to cast couple of unsolicited votes:
    SRWare Iron
    Moonchild Productions Pale Moon

wishing the possibly best most decent browsers for all of us...

Chrome became ULTRA heavy, even on recent multicore, ultra fast 2400 ddr3, systems.

OK, we can say all the scripts on the pages are the culprits, but hey, if we disable them, most pages won't even display.

With our current computers and fast Internet lines, these pages should load and fully display all its content, in a few 1/10 seconds.
Instead, with ssd drives, even the basic Google page takes like 2-3 seconds to display.
Of course, if we inspect a page, even a random website/page, if we try to open 1 of those 10-20 .JS files,

even a small file will be several pages long, with thousands of math functions, procedures, etc etc.

Too bad. If we tried to use an office 97 app on a current computer,or a windows 98, it would load in 1 second.

The same applies to the webpages : without all the cap, today, we could open 100 bookmarks/websites, in a couple of seconds.

But with all the scripts, all the advertising scripts and pictures/animations, 1080p videos as a background, etc etc, all our incredible spare power is lost.

But the worst thing, to me, are the ads. Content, good content, isn't important anymore. No . The only thing that cares, is finding a way to insert as many ads as possible, even if the website can barely open.

As an example (sorry, Saint): AUDIOZ

since a few weeks, the website is full of ads and scripts, that open new webpages, redirect to porn or dating websites, redirect to pages with scripts that try to install apps from the Google play store, etc etc. Clicking on the page to scroll it launch new scripts, over and over.
I've never seen such 0-friendly browsing website.

But you know what? Those ads, scripts, to dating/porn/apps, false virus alerts, and all the worst scam on earth, MUST BE those that make the most cash.

And of course, those scripts weren't active , on a particular random day. NO. They were set a few days before the Ilok2 releases.
Because those ilok2 releases + plenty of other 'merry Christmas ' releases from other groups, there would be hundreds thousands visits. And that's what happened. Those released apps attracted several hundreds THOUSANDS visitors. And since those 3-4 weeks, those hundreds thousands guys HAVE BEEN visiting the website like 10 or 20 times a day (they don't want to miss a release that would be taken down only a few minutes later), and that, for almost 30 days.

Dare we imagining how many DOZENS and DOZENS MILLIONS clicks, spams, redirections,pop-ups, and other advertising tricks just happened, on Audioz, since they were activated?...

    Back to Chrome,
The buggers definitely don't like when users have a little power over the displayed pages:

I had a FANTASTIC chrome extension, that would let me make a screen shot of the page, select a area, auto-scroll and capture the full page, save as image, PDF, etc etc . We could even click on EDIT PAGE, and suddenly, we could just add, delete, insert, some text, pictures, whatever, like the page was open with an editor, and once I would remove some cap I didn't like, like ads, or any other element that would fuck up the page layout or printing, I could simply save, print, it, with the layout I wanted.

What about those pages with scripts that don't allow us to copy, right-click, etc? Welcome the EDIT option, with a click, I can now select whatever I want.

One of the TOP 3 extensions EVER, for me.

But, like 2 weeks ago, I was using Chrome, and suddenly, I got a pop-up ' the page edit extension was automatically removed'.

    What?

Worse: couldn't find it anymore on the chrome extensions page.

Fortunately, there was another extension, with less options, but it could do 90% like the deleted one.

And, surprise, 2 weeks later, it got removed automatically as well.

We'll, looks like those little extensions didn't please Google. I wonder why...

In my experience, Chromium and SRWare Iron are best chromium based browsers.
For firefox, cyberfox is a good choice.
Im sticking with Firefox. Lots of plugins wihout any limitations.

Looks promising for Chrome breakaway. Much more convincing me to try out after knowing this was a brainchild of Brendan Eich, the creator of Javascript.

Firefox 57 "Quantum" just came out, and it's noticeably faster, it's more secure, handles multicore very well, and uses less memory than Chrome. There are tons more new features, too. Worth a serious look.

Checkout https://privacytools.io for some really good info on locking Firefox down for privacy with settings and extensions (and lots more info on other tools too).

VIvaldi is absolutely excellent & is compatible with chrome add-ons.
There's also Kameleon (I don't know if it's still developed though) and Waterfox ( a variant of Firefox though, and same goes for my favorite browser, Cyberfox, but that will no longer be developed.)
Maxthon is ok, too. There's also Avant & UCBrowser

Just use a Firefox variant with NoScript & Ghostery or something. You'll stop being tracked.
