Hey guys I recently got Pro Tools 12 and I am loving it for audio and recording live bands. But when working with MIDI in pro toolss for electronuic music I find i t a bit tedious. What are your oppinions on the best daw for MIDI and Electronic Music? Would it be ableton? I always viewed that daw as more of a performance type of things. I have cubase 7 and like the midi workflow in that but was jsut wondering what other options are out there. thanks guys cheers!!

I suspect a lot of votes for ableton, some for FL studio... then I hear a lot of people praise cubase for it's editing abilities,

I also am not a big fan of PT , though it was the 1st real DAW I tried out, but I recently bought my license for Reaper
and will be sticking with that for the forseeable future ! I found editing the midi I do in there to be pretty efficient, but maybe
not as suitable for electronic styles...

In the end, seems to be a matter of personal taste, and workflow preferences.... so really just have to try them to see
which one suits your efforts and aims the best...and what better place have you found to try them all than Z ?

Are you using Mac, or Windows?

It really depends on the nature of the genre of music or your personal style thereof, and opon one's sense of workflow. I'm really into Logic Pro, and I've found Pro Tools' MIDI editor to be lacking in detail and accuracy; Abelton's seems a bit timid but it's great for automations. Reaper and Ardour are good for MIDI editing, though the latter takes some acclimation. Cubase and Studio One are pretty good for MIDI editing.

Ultimately, I'd say that any DAW that enables one to output MIDI files or tracks as a notated score is probably worth considering as a MIDI editor.

I like Cubase for midi (actually I like it for all except for the the price :) )
but, from Your description, it seems to me that FL could cover Your needs.

Best thing is to try them out... that is what AZ is for:wink:

Take a few days, and try them all

I know/use Cubase, so that is my answer.
It's usually not what tools you use, but how well you know your tools.

S1 has it`s good sides , but not my cup of tea.
the drag and drop features are very practical, and of course many others, but I could not force myself to like that gui :dunno:

Cubase in terms of editing. FL studio in terms of workflow.

Best in my opinion for Midi editing is FL STUDIO. The FL Piano roll is just in a league of it's own. However Studio One is pretty good when it comes to Midi and is great with audio like Pro Tools.

Started with Cubase, but now I use S1. Still think that Cubase midi editor is better.

in my opinion, sonar has the best tools for midi. cakewalk (the precursor to sonar) was one of the first daws, and it is very mature. but it is often overlooked now.

For me Cubase is still more advanced in MIDI editing than others, especially in more complex arrange. I dont know recent PT, but olders were crap in MIDI. PC Logic was also great, i don't know recent. Reaper still needs improvements in functions.

Cubase is the best daw for midi editing/scoring.
But due to the nature of the question I doubt that this is what the op is really after.

the more complex your (midi) composition is, the more u understand Cubase is best...
but there are quite a lot of thing u can do..i admit it takes a long time to get fast results.
Its not the first choice for EDM tho, i understand why Ableton gives faster "results"...

FL Studio ist the best for midi because the many options you have. I use it only for midi editing if i have a lot to do. Because my main DAW is Ableton Live.
