    Fabfilter Q2

Is one of the best parametric EQ's I have - If not the best parametric EQ I have !
But what would make it supremely better would be the inclusion of a number of LFO's and Envelopes
for modulation - Fabfilter Q2 is great for filter effects and with those inclusions the need for that horrible
Volcano plugin would be eliminated -

    No ?

Yea, that would be a really good idea in my opinion. I never really liked Volcano. It's unnecessarily complicated and doesnt really achive something special. But actually I don't know if Fab Filter developers will go that route ever, since I think they don't see Pro-Q as a modulation type Plugin. And also it's very easy to connect parameters from Pro-Q to your DAW's automation, so maybe there isn't really a need to have LFO's and Envelopes on board. But in general it's a nice idea imo, let's see for Pro-Q3. :D

Pro Q 2 shines because of its straightforwardness and simplicity. It's intuitive and simple to setup and configure...And it's unbelievably light on the CPU.

That being said, I don't think it's a good idea to add any features that may compromise its usability and lightness...Things can get really complicated when you mix FabFilter with modulations, lfos, etc...

I strongly believe that clean and precise equalisation and colourful moving filters should be kept separate.

It depends how you use FabQ2 I guess - For me it's more than just an Parametric EQ ---
FabQ2 is responsible for some very cutting edge DnB sound design at the moment - and it's bing used in ways that you might not think - Resampling ---

why would you want to modulate a surgical eq?

Sure, but like any business, FabFilter should focus on how the majority of their customers use their products. No company will ever risk losing a lot of customers to please a few.

Pro Q is an specialized tool, not a swiss army knife type of plugin...It's way wiser to make a better and improved version of Volcano somewhere in the future, which is something they're probably already working on.

Anyway, there are awesome filter plugins out there, like The Drop and FilterFreak. Why don't you give them a try?

You could also try using third-party plugins or automation to modulate Pro Q's filters as well, if that's what you really want. Check out LFO Tool. You could use it to control Pro Q's parameters:

Get a copy of mux modular. You can assign lfo's to vst parameters. Another way is to use kore and the macro xy. You'll need to save 8 different states with Kore 2 and then use the xy to morph.

Sure if you can only afford one plugin Q2 will sort of do for creative sound fx. But there's nothing it can do (in terms of modulated fx) that can't be done better and more apropriately in volcano2.

The Drop & FilterFreak can not have their filter curve shapes manipulated in the same way you can in FabQ2 - thats the whole point - that's why it's a good idea to include LFO's/Modulators...

Automating Fabfiter from within a DAW as you've suggested is what has to be done at present and in suggesting it you appear to agree on the potential and therefore the need - so we've come full circle...

I don't agree with this conservative purest stance - Plugins are for manipulating sounds - the addition of features that promote that are logically of benefit - I use FabQ2 everyday for surgical work for trimming work but I also use it as a superior filtering effect tool...

Wrong ! unfortunately - there are many things that can not be achieved with Volcano that can be with FabQ2 - Slopes & infinite curve shapes - multiple notch spikes - for instance ---

How well does Q2 respond to automation of its parameters?

Nah...I don't agree and I also fail to see the point here. I really think there are better tools for this purpose out there.

But if you think you can only accomplish what you want by modulating Pro Q's filters, then by all means, go ahead.

Marketwise, I don't believe this is what the market wants from a surgical EQ plugin such as Pro Q. None of FabFilter's direct competitors are moving into this direction as well. The demand for such features is probably very small.

You know, you could always use ableton live if you really wanted to modulate q2's parameters...

Very well in fact - essential for resampling midrange bass in DnB --- A secrete weapon :) Try automating 5/6 node points crossing back and forth and through each other - Distort - EQ - Phaze - and repeat over again and again -

    FabQ2 as a sound design tool :)
