There is a way, a hard way. Give your credit card to your beloved mom/sister/girlfriend/wife/lover or whatever else... (be sure is a female). I belive you will stop hoarding after one day. :)

This is an awesome topic! Just did a reformat installed just my faves.

One thing I realized when I was hoarding. Is no matter how many plugs I get I cant download a plugin for swag. I need to keep it simple stupid

This is what i follow now. Specially fifth. I had too started with only collecting plugins till mid of this year (started from last year). But I never used them because I did not know how to use them. I am learning by limiting myself with one single synth (that too freeware) with freeware FX plugins as of now to create complete track.

It is very difficult to get out of mindset to collect from every post on AZ. But, once one can control oneself, there is always good time saved for producing good music.

By such strict discipline to myself... I started respecting production process more. Another benefit is lighter hard disk. I have still 200GBs in my 500GB portable hard disk.

    Best of Luck...!!

I'm just curious, but do people who hoard software also hoard other things? Or is it limited to software. For example, keeping old junk/electronics in case it becomes useful to repair something. I really believe it's an addiction.

Actually; I'm kind of the opposite of a hoarder when it comes to anything else. I can't stand having junk lying around in my apparment and love to throw stuff away. Its funny. I gotta make clear to myself that software is the exact same deal

@audiowolf hmmm, that's a good question. I think it may be. I know for me, I tend to 'collect' all sorts of softz/samplez/etc, but, I also have tons of old computer gear. However, it's weird, because, I, myself don't use all of it, but, I have it "just in case" I have a friend who is like, "hey man, do you have (add whatever here)? I've come to realize that it all adds up to a bunch of external drives sitting, full, and never actually gets tapped into. Not to mention the boxes and boxes of old computer parts sitting in the garage.
Last week was the first time in probably 5 years that this finally came in handy. A friend of mine's kid ( I say kid, but he is 20) just went through rehab, but, is an exceptional musician. He had no creative outlet, so, I built him a machine and loaded it with stuff, all for free, just so it would take his mind off of his addiction and focus it towards making music. Kinda weird now that I think about it, but, for the first time, 'hoarding' helped out a person who otherwise wouldn't be able to get it done on his own.

My suggestion is record in your DAW with real instrument, with/without click, and keep plug-ins that they paste well with your sound (I'm experienced)

I just formatted my pc and rebuilt from scratch the system. This allowed me to focus only on plug-ins in the last 10 years I have really served for my music, and no more than two for each type: 2 synths, 2 reverbs, 2 echoes, 2 rompler... and Kontakt obviously. It was also fun to choose the best pair of each species (like Noah) of the 10,000 available... if in the future will come something better or more suitable for my music, well, I will add it. But now, have a limited selection of plug-in really important and powerful gives me the feeling of being able to do everything in lightness.

sorry i didn't read all replies here but this is my opinion. Get rid of everything you don't use but be aware if you have any old projects. This is the main issue for me. Either have a backup sound or sample it.

I will also add my opinion to buy you main audio software. a lot of it isn't that costly & then you rely on less stuff from here.

This post may seem controversial, but that's how it is for me...

I like hoarding. I love it

I just like to stay in touch with the tech and getting new updates for my favourite plugins, etc. I have a massive Nebula library that I probably never use at its fullest, and a good chunk of plugins that I downloaded time ago when they were "the thing". They got replaced eventually but I really find difficult to delete old stuff (this applies to all shit on my computer).

Now that I got that out of my system, I'll tell you that 90% of what I have is not even installed. We hoard because we can, and because it's "free". But the thing is that I got stuff for a lifetime. I wouldn't care if I had to keep the ones I have forever and not being able to use different ones. It's just collecting, I guess. Truth is, everytime I do a fresh install my plugin list gets smaller and smaller.

To the OP, the answer is pretty simple. Much simpler than what any of the other guys have said. DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING. Just start mixing your project. When you need a plugin, install it. Repeat. This way you'll only have the plugins you use, no bullshit. :guru:

If u use ableton as daw,I think ableton live suite has all the plugins you ll ever need, and mixing, mastering needs can be met, just need to watch some tutorial videos though about it. for simple stuff, theres a simple one solution ableton plugin rack for mastering and mixing using max4live, you can search at audioz. one is free(8 free ableton live racks-mixing and mastering) while the other is paid(from samplemagic or samplephonics I'm not sure the name)its an all in one product. However when it comes to sound presets and quality you might wanna look elsewhere as ableton suite sound presets sounds are just decent. Sound/intruments collection-wise, personally I think its better to invest in sound/instruments or even sample packs, rather then in plugins and gears, except kontakt and sound/instrument plugins of course. Also what genre of music are u into? limiting your genre to 1 or 2 will limit your plugin/gear usage obviously.

Probably..nearly every classic or favourite piece of music you love and every tune you hum never went near a bit of tech other than a good mixing desk and producer. Beatles, Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, Dylan, Everything Motown....never heard of vsts !
