Wow never knew JB could do all that. I had to look him up playing on youtube. Kid is nice on the piano. Can understand where the hate comes from at times, but it shouldnt certainly be related to his talent or ability as an artist/musican.

"We are the world..........we are the children" Maybe if we all just hold hands, and wish, Justin might poop out another version of that song for all you bieber-heads. I hate no one. It is just my musical taste, and just because I dislike what he does gives no one a reason to call me a hater. I also would wish that someone more deserving had broken the record, but they didn't; so be it. There are certainly more deserving, "new" artists out there that I really love, in my own opinion. I am glad, though, that we are now aware that he doesn't use autotune, because after watching the Today Show performance this week, that explains why he was consistently missing notes. Wait a minute.....I don't think Elvis used autotune either.......wow! Is this a fortunate stroke of serendipity?

    Now we're talking!:)
Maybe because it stink money too much and that the benefits goes more at sound ingeneers that artists who use tricks like you mention. Beside this, great artist don't need to be a star as long as they have enough to live and do what they want. Maybe we could have had more albums from Doors, Jeff Buckley or Nirvana for exemple.
Frequently, I'm sad to see artist that I like the voice in a shitty sugar pop production(i.e.: Love Lorde voice but I don't like her music.Despite of all her talent). I think they could do so much better rather than follow the easy way of cash and let them become entertaining products.
I agree with you on the fact that there's also positive things. But often, was great before notoriety.

I think you understand my point of view, at least a bit.

    However, interresting exchanges.

It is Friday night, I'm drunk, and I want to say this:

If I was to pursue the money that music has promised I think I would feel compelled to sell myself to the masses. After all, they have the money I want.

Selling myself entails becoming cognizant of the prevailing winds in popular culture. I could hire on to a corporation such as Disney [like Justin Bieber did] and let their masses-molding expertise create an image to sell. [now THAT did NOT work so well for Justin Bieber] Or I could use YouTube to try and create a ground-swell of popularity, like Shakey Graves did [worked pretty well for him!]. Or I could make social and political waves like Pussy Riot did. [did not work that well for them]

Screw all that. Popular culture is not now nor has it ever been representative of the best we as humans have to offer.

I'll let people like Lady Gaga pretend to be a female Marilyn Manson for the shock value while all along her jazz talent is up there with the greats. Just watch Tony Bennett and her sing together. She had to choose shock value to sell herself in this modern market. Sad.

    I don't have to.

But I have to do something. I suppose I will do what I have been doing all along. Keep playing & giving the crowd a good time. Word of mouth has built me up this far and it is the most honest, genuine, and authentic method I have found.

Problem is, more than 40 years of that has NOT given me the money. But then money isn't everything. Just look at what Justin Bieber had to endure just to sell himself. [with Disney's help]. I'll bet his testosterone level went WAY down for a while!

    One more thing.

With all the truly magnificent music available to listen to, who has the time to waste on Justin Bieber?

Back then you could be an overweight Elvis moping around stage and sell more records than Michael Jackson. And today you can be Justin Bieber and sell more than Chris Brown without having to dance your ass off and do backflips on stage all night. White people are paid more and receive more merit for doing black shit on stage while black people are often shunned about the way they perform their own music. Surely no one could truly be wondering "What's so special about Justin Bieber?".

To be honest you have to be pretty close minded to judge music based only on someones name. I found few pretty nice tracks from his last album too. Just because he is in top charts doesn't mean he makes bad music (I think?). Everyone has their own opinion and you should respect that.

Yes you are absolutely right about judging music before hearing it, based solely on the artist's name, being wrong. I only think he doesn't deserve this 'honour' because of his terrible attitude and his even worse behaviour. He is no role model. Perhaps Elvis wasn't either, but at least he was a music game changer.

Lot of dumb votes flying around in here. Looks like some of you music elites are as galvanized by Justin Bieber as the tweenies.

Personally I "dislike" Bieber on a few levels. One because he's got a history of acting like a douchebag. Two because underneath being a spoiled douchebag there doesn't appear to be any real personality, charisma, or magnetism about him.

Aside from that, I kind of agree with Evorax on this one. Aside from finding him kind of an objectionable person, I'm kind of neutral about him. I don't see how his music is any worse than 99 percent of pop - which is (in my opinion) only bad because it is often the antithesis of originality.

As someone who makes rap, it's funny to see how quickly people get pulled into the silly that's not real hip hop circlejerk. Often it becomes about hating on people who are mainstream regardless of whether or not they're any good. It's just an easy route to feeling unwarranted superiority. What eventually happens is you decide that popularity and crappiness are somehow directly related and do the opposite of what makes things popular, which makes your music... you guessed it... not popular.

Which is not to say that there's not a lot of completely brainless, meritless pop and rap that gets a lot of shine.

But I just ignore it because getting mad about it is kind of stupid.

Meh, it's drip fed to the kids. I know people earlier in thread have said this may not be true but pop stars today make more money from their toy dolls, perfumes and fashion chains than they do from their music.

Look at U2 and Bono. Made more from the Facebook shares than they did in their entire career as musicians(to date). It may be a tangent but it's basically capitalism gone mad. All the mainstream stuff is decided by board rooms full of sharply dressed men.

The popularity of some music completely mystifies me. Garth Brooks for example. None the less people love it.

To be fair Elvis had a lot more competition and less people, with less money to buy records than Beaver.

FWIW you should all look into this...

Which is originally why I was bashing him. He is no role model, nor is he a horrible person. He has 1 or 2 okay songs, "That Power" is a nice one. That, and I wasn't criticizing his musical experience, but rather that of some of the others that accompany him on the charts. I play guitar, drums, keyboard/piano, ukulele, harmonica, bass guitar, various exotic/orchestral percussion, cello, and didgeridoo, so people may feel free to criticize my skills as well - I don't care because people complain either way. And as for my lack of "creativity", I am no chart-smashing superstar, but I am one creative guy when it comes to life in general. No need to go on about what. Too much to add here.
While there are much worse role models in the music industry, Justin is known for some bad things. Hollywood does that to you. When you have more money than you know what to do with, and people everywhere threatening to kill you, and millions of fetal staged female children drooling over you, and paparazzi camera's in your face every damn place you go, chances are you're gonna f**k up a bit on something, somewhere and everyone's gonna hear about it for days and days while you're just saying "Oh for god's sakes, just forget about that sh!t, already!" He called a girl at a swimming pool that she looked like a "beached whale" and went drunk driving in his sparkly Lamborghini. I lost a good friend of mine back in 2007 to a drunk driving accident and almost lost my cousin in 2008 to a driving drunk accident. In both cases they were not the driver. I'd like my kids one day to not take after that behavior, (if I actually had kids).
At least he admitted his wrongdoings, and his mistakes, and apologized for them.
On the other hand, you have Miley Cyrus who performs on stage with giant inflatable penises and her turkey butt sticking out while we're all still trying to forget about it. There are little girls watching that, and parents think it's disgusting. Puberty seems to have gone in reverse on her end.
Enter Nikki Minaj: Listen to those horrid lyrics: "You a stupid hoe, you a you a stupid hoe. You a stupid hoe *repeat 40 agonizing times*"
Just saying, there will always be something worse that comes out that we do not like. I will take "If I was you're boyfriend" over "Watch me whip, now watch me nae nae" any day of the week (In a case where I had to pick one of the two as my poison). His music really isn't my type of jam. His voice back in the day was a little high pitched, and a lot of people have that impression of him forever. To me, it's his attitude that's the real problem - If I was actually looking for one, but truth is I don't really care. I don't spend my life b!t**ing about what others do with their lives. That's their choice for their life, and not in any way mine. If people want to complain about me, I could care less. I was fortunate enough to enter this earth with my head and my limbs, and without some godawful disease, I was fortunate enough not to get killed by a meteorite in my sleep or something. So Instead of wasting that gift on ranting about others' mistakes, I'd rather learn from my own and be free and happy.

I'm glad to see people who think like me on this one at least. Most of you seem to be around the 40's while I'm in the 20's and to be my age with a complete different mind nowdays kinda sucks, a lot.
