Why VSTs sound like they are bitcrushed?

Discussion in 'Cubase / Nuendo' started by studiodiciassette, Nov 11, 2015.

  1. I guys I need some tech help!
I got Cubase 8 almost one year ago and never get any problems, until this week...

My VSTs start sound are kinda bitcrushed... For example, if i put a reverb (dont matter which) on a vocal track or a drum channel (Superior Drummer, in this case) the output sounds "crushed" like it was some sort of bit deprivation or whatever. I've tried to switch to 24 to 16bit, 44 to 48.000hz and viceversa, switch to 32/96.000, try to managing the ASIO buffer but nothin' changes. I also tried some couple of different audio interfaces with no success. Reaper seems to handle the issue for some time but after a couple of minutes it falls like Cubase. All my stuff are legit so there shouldnt be any crack-related problems.

I start wonderin' about the speakers but they sound "normal" if I play unprocessed audio or CDs, MP3s, etc...

The customer service say that "calibrate" the asio buffer and switching the bitrate should do the trick but i've try so many combinations of bitrate/frequency/buffer with no result.

Has someone come across the same issue?

No idea, but have you changed anything? USB hardware, driver, OS, System Settings?

  4. Just updated Cubase and a bunch of drivers months ago, nothing recently... I've switched some interfaces to see if it was a CI2+ problem with no success at all

If you're describing what I think you are, you are hitting cpu spikes. The audio system seems to go weird when this happens in Pro 8. Close cubase and restart the pc. When in your daw, hit f12 while the project is playing and see if cpu spikes are causing the issue. Adjust your buffers accordingly. Namely, blast those suckers. And MAKE SURE YOU JAVE ASIO GUARD 2 AND MAX POWER SETTINGS enabled in cubase. Hope this helps.

If you're still looking for suggestions, you might want to try watching this video and using this guy's system and registry tweaks.

I had that problem with Valhalla's Shimmer a few times, but only with this plug. Reopened the DAW and everything went to normal. It happened rarely though.

I have the same problem time to time. I go to daw options and switch my audio interface to windows audio or asio4all. Then everything's normal.

I had this issue when I was running an incompatible Firewire card with my audio interface. Losing sync, sounding really bad.

Is your audio interface internal, USB or Firewire? It is either an interface issue or a driver issue.

I think it has nothing to do with daws, I would rather check audio hardware, drivers or eventually see ram and cpu usage. If you're using your computer for internet purposes as well, check for possible virus infection.

do call customer service first. steinberg's is usually not half bad.

  15. That PC is not networked and I've checked everything really... The CPU/RAM usage is well tamed and so are the ASIOs...

do it two times... same answer/no solution

  17. Yep... they are a "must-have" and there are no latency problem at all...

By the way, I'll try to update to Windows 10 to access the latest driver... Let's see if the new born can solve something...

Might sound dumb but check in Cpanel, Power Management to be on "Performance", not Balanced. Windows is stupid as fuck lately and don't use all CPU because of this shit Power management, for dektops too.

  19. I've triple checked all the windows related stuff and everything is setted as it could be... I also try to see if something was wrong within the BIOS, but no... Nothin' wrong with the "machine" itself... What I cant really understand is why it stops workin' so suddenly, i do absolutely nothing out of the ordinary within' months!

That indicates that you should check the VST audio signal circuit.
I'm on a MAC so i cannot offer much help. An unwanted bit-crushed-like effect
makes me think of drastic changes in the resolution of audio signal.

  21. Yeah, I'm pretty sure about it too but I cant catch any anomalies at all... :(
