It seems a trivial question ... uses a chorus! or vocoder ... Already done. But I'm not satisfied with the results, or maybe I did not use the right plug-ins...
If you would to get a chorus effect using a single vocal line, which vst do you use it?

Chorus is NOT like double-tracking. Double-tracking tops any effect (chorus, flanger, phaser, etc etc). But if you don't have a double vocal line, go with effects. :)

If you have one vocal that sings the chorus/refrain twice (or more times), copy the first refrain/chorus and layer it with the second (and take the second and layer it with the first).

Do you mean a 'choir' effect or harmony?
There are harmoniser effects around too.

Thank you all for the advice. I'll try them one by one, and when I reach the result I'm looking for (something halfway between choir and harmoniser) will let you know ...

Definitely check out Antares' CHOIR plug, which I believe is the one you're looking for.

If you want you can create a artificiel harmonics with some great tools like Melodyne /Harmony Engine Evo /Zplane Vielklang instant harmony v2 or if you use cubase 7 or higher you have good stuff to a same if you use fl studio you have newtone plugin .
If you want something like chorus effect on vocal you can use Soundtoys microshifter / antares Duo or choir / Eventide H3000

Double-tracking is a chorus effect. Any attempt by a person to say the same thing at the same time over a previous recording creates a chorus. No one can physically "duplicate" a word they say. Double-tracking vocals refers to the "same vocalist" attempting to say or sing the same words in time over a previous recording of themselves, and regardless how close or separate the harmonic range is when the tracks are paired the result is always a chorus.

If you want to get a chorus from a single vocal track and VST's are the only option.. more than likely you'll only be satisfied with the results of anything you do within a close octave. But if you have a tenor and want to get a bass and soprano track out of it.. I'm not aware of any plugin that can pull that off in a way that sounds genuine/human enough. Plugins have a long way to go in this category. This is one of those things where you can have the current best thing available(hardware), and still wish you could stretch things further before they sound alien.

Yes, that is exactly what I meant. I know all that (been double-tracking since 1993). Although double-tracking is chorus it tops any "fixed/digital copy" chorus effect, as each voice is so modulated in timing, pitch, amplitude, formant, proximity, timbre, etc etc.

Speaking of meaning the same thing (or being in-phase or out-of-phase): It's funny, when I double-track and the vocals phase each other out I go "crap, I have to do it again". It's like a perfect alignment of multiple things (which is quite rare), but instead of going "yes!" I view it as a faulty take. :)

That's cool. The algorithm of some of your words actually had to be almost perfectly offset so your negative voice curve held a linear sustain with the positive. That does seem pretty rare. I haven't had that occur when double-tracking as I'm always doing something different.. harmonizing, whispering, ad libbing, etc. But I have broken a glass on my kitchen counter during a sustained note when I used to be set up in my living room a few years ago.

Couldn't you just nudge it a little?

I've recorded vocals so closely aligned that they... do something neat :dunno: It sounds more like comb filtering than actual phasing to me. I don't know the science behind it so I can't confirm that.

Sure I can nudge, but I rather just re-record it on the spot (if I can).

Yes, it is actually comb filtering (very very short delay) when they are that close together.

It doesn't happen too often, but when it does there is a very distinct phasey/comb-ey sound. It's like if you should make a second copy of the first vocal, and then autotune/melodyne/pitch-correct the second one and mix it with the first one. Then there will be some weird phase-y/comb-ey sounds when the voices drifts in and out of phase.
