Hi

I have heard this sound in so many occasions but have always wondered what exactly is causing it. It comes around 00:34-00:35 and it almost sounds like playing artificial harmonics on an electric guitar. Is it caused naturally by the Moog Voyager itself as a result of being an analog synth or is it due to the modulation of a certain parameter? Can this be achieved with a VSTi analog synth (e.g. Monark)?

You mean the phase shift? Try a slow phaser, or try pulse width modulation (PWM).
edit: He is modulating vibrato amount with the mod-wheel. But if you are referring to the timbre of the synth, try PWM.

I thought it would be a phaser, but again I think it is much more controlled than a phaser it only occurs at certain parts it doesn't seem to be continuous like a phaser or an LFO modulation, the only thing I can think of is maybe a pedal assigned to it, or maybe I'm just being too picky :D

 

this effect is a vibrato .The vibrato is a modulation of the pitch.In this song it's a vibrato with a medium/low speed.I'm sure of that !
For me it's not a question of phaser.
But I agree Baxter when he says it's a square wave,and you have to try different amounts of pulse width to find the right sound you want to get.

Try that and give us an answer of the result,please !

 

Well, I don't know how a pitch vibrato would create that sound, he uses the pitch wheel to bend a few notes but I don't think a vibrato is responsible for that sort of sound that I'm talking about, it's almost like a few notes in between are one octave higher than the others, they sound just like artificial or pinch harmonics on an electric guitar as I mentioned before, but I'll give it a try, thanks!

 

That's my opinion.
With the modulation wheel he modulates the amount(the depth ) of the vibrato,and the vibrato is setted on a medium/low speed.
Or he modulates the pitch ,via the modulation wheel ,with a lfo.
The guy doesn't modulates a few notes with the modulation wheel,,but he plays some notes,and at a moment he plays a long note and he is pushing the modulation wheel which modulates the pitch of the sound..
BTW,I don't think it's a guitar sample but a square wave !

Those 2009 units probably have Aftertouch upgrades and it sounds it's a case of aftertouch routed to vibrato? Don't have a Voyager here so I might be wrong...

 

No of course it's not a guitar sample I didn't mean it was, it's a Voyager afterall... but thanks! I'll give it a try

 

I haven't a Voyager too,just the Arturia MiniMoog and the GForce Minimonsta !
But I don't believe in a modulation via Aftertouch...I might be wrong too !!!

 

Have you tried/explored PWM, Formant or Sync yet?

It really does sound like controlled sustain akin to that which a crafty guitarist would impose and set loose upon our eardrums. Magnet vs magnet, at that moment so so very beautiful.

 

Sounds like oscillator sync, or even a phaser. I've achieved a similar sound in image line's harmor, but anything with a phaser or oscillator sync options can get you that sound.

 

I don't think it's a Formant filter, but PWM and sync are the closest I could get, but still I can't get that one octave higher sound that is clearly heard in there, but it is close, thanks for the help

Right? That is also the first thing I think of everytime I hear that effect, it's like an electric guitar giving high pitch feedback or played with an ebow or something, Adam Holzman uses this technique a lot in his playing and it adds a unique expression to the analog synth sound IMO.

I couldn't get any good results with a phaser, but oscillator sync does seem to help, but still not that same effect, maybe it's just my lack of knowledge in fine tuning the parameters in order to get the best result.

 

he's clicked the octave dials up a notch on oscillators 1 & 2 at 0:23 if that helps.

 

I have the Harmor synth,but this synth is far different of a Minimoog !!! You can't compare this two synths ! Phaser is one of the principles of the harmor's synthesis,like oscillators or filters.
Try to reproduce this sound rather with the Arturia Mini V or the Gforce software Minimonsta,which are Minimoog emulations !

 

This gave me the idea that maybe he is blending in the other oscillator which is one octave higher on those notes or maybe even shifting between different oscillators to get that sound, but how he does that so quick and without touching the mixer I can't grasp, but it could be a possibility. Thanks for your input

 

An envelope or a sloooow lfo or combinations of such controlling phaser, sync or whatever just wonderfully catching the moment.
