    Hi Peeps,

I have one question to the BigKick Plugin bei Credland. So I have became stems for a Remix and the Track is in D minor, but I can't make a Kick in D with this plugin. Is there any other trick or hint to solve this problem ?!

In the past, I have used samples for kicks, but I bought BigKick because sometimes it's really handy for my work and it gives me results, I'm lookin for. But in this case ... I can't create Kicks in key of C, C#, D and D#.

I know these frequencies are really, really low and one octave up, really high, but how to solve this problem ?!

Would be great, if some of you can share some hints or tipps ;-)

    Thank you

Some trance guys make kick not in root, but 4th, so in your case it would be G, very nice key for a kick :like:

I for myself really "hate" to tune my kick. It takes so much time and sometimes the result isn't really promising. If you have problems choosing the right key, I'd recommend giving the circle of fifths a try and the basics of cadences (if you haven't already). As @xsze said you could try the 4th, but actually you are doing it in minor, so watch out to not confuse everything with major cadences.

So back to the origin, I think you have to get Sample-packs with pre-tuned and -marked kicks. Otherwise you can give Abletons new tuner a chance. It comes in really handy for this purpose. If you have a really low-endy kick you get good results (if you have Ableton). Otherwise there will be other tuners who can get you similar far

As xsze said you can use 4th or 5th too...Use A if you have a song in D and A" if your song is in D"...

Image a integral serial music with all drums in tune?
The meaning of tuning drum can be just where it resonates better.
In "mixed" dance music are mainly boring... go for serial tunes please?

Thanks for the tipps ;-) ... helps a lot ... I'll try everything :like:

My idea was to make the low kick with BigKick, but in this case its useless, because not possible ...
I have never tuned my kicks before, just used my ears, but everywhere you can read or hear, "you have to tune your kick" ... in some cases it makes sense ...

great tipp with the 5th ... I'll give it a try ...

Edit: ahhhhh maaaaan !!! just found what I need ...
I've choosed a higher key and pitched it to the a lower key ... I forgot about it, because I never use the knob :disco:

If you're speaking technically, then D1 (36.71 Hertz) or D2 (73.42 Hertz) aren't too low or too high in frequency. Also your kick doesn't have to be in the root note of your key, it simply needs to be in a note that is in your given scale. Oftentimes, it's even preferable to not tune it to the root because this can cause frequency clashes with your bass. You can tune it to the third, fifth or seventh notes in your key but oftentimes you can create a more interesting and edgy vibe if tuning to the second, fourth or sixth so experiment to find the exact sound you're after.

Something a lot of people seem to forget about tuned kicks is that most modern dance kicks are actually pitched envelope sweeps, which means they start at a certain frequency, then sweep down to another frequency, which means it sweeps through all the frequencies inbetween as well. This is something to keep in mind when you "tune" a kick.

Disclaimer: the following is just my experience & 2cents, not hard science.

Generally there are 3 main frequencies to take care of, the start frequency, the end frequency and the frequency where kick and bass overlap. Sure you can adjust the length of your kick to an exact 16th to prevent overlap, but i personally like to make some overlap to glue kick and bass together.

I usually end the kick on the fundamental and tune the overlap on a higher note. Higher notes usually feel "faster" for me, so it depends on the groove of the bass which note i tune it to, and of course the scale i'm using.
The start frequency determines how "sharp" i want the kick to sound, though i do keep it in the scale as well.

Clashing frequencies can seriously f up your dynamics, i'm pretty sure most of you know this handy little free plugin http://bram.smartelectronix.com/plugins.php?id=4
which is superb for checking those weird spikes when kick & bass frequencies clash.
So instead of using sidechain compressors/limiters and dynamics gadgets to fix it, use that plugin to accurately tweak the problem by adjusting your kick. Minute adjustments of just a few hz can cause a spike of several DBs.

Personally i like the sonic academy romero kick, even though using something which has that artists name attached to it makes me feel... icky lol.
It offers surprisingly accurate control to fine-tune kicks imho.
