with a 200€ field recorder you can record decent your voice, i did that and use it for a drone piece worked awsome.
the room acoustics should be well approved, but the bathroom should always work for that.

i love this bundle here: http://www.earthmoments.com/bundles/voice-of-india
a variation of indian male and female chants, vocal loops, used them as chops for a few pieces

and then we have Future Loops Total India:
    http://www.futureloops.com/product-totalindia.php
was released as 3 DVDs, only one DVD has all vocals on it. but the perc stuff is good too.

East West has released Voice of Passion, India and Syria was leaked or samples from it, i am sure its on the page too somewhere.

with acapellas you can also create some fantastic vocal stuff.

@spidervis that was one of the first akai CDs i download from the web in 2004, there are nice turkish vocal loops on it. remember it was ripped as nrg (nero burning room image file)

With omni pattern or M/S config, you're getting dry sound if you yell to the mic from close distance. Especially in M/S as you can just remove the side information.

@ArticStorm - With Cardioid, you can't yell from close distance as "proximity effect" kicks in. And with X/Y (especially 120°), you're missing a lot of mono information.
BTW, from what I read, do you have one of Zoom recorders?

By the way, if you got money to spare, Audio Technica AT2035 is really worth it for vocals.
    It's doesn't cost one's kidney too.

'Ethnic vocals' is a layman term used most frequently by movie directors.
'Ethnic' feeling encompasses various vocal techniques used by singers, or it may point to performers from Middle East. That's where I got confused at your request - any professional singer can fulfil most director's perspective of "Ethnic-sounding" voice. So you're looking for Movie/TV representation of 'Ethnic Voice' or for a sample pack of a vocal performer from eastern countries?

The Shure SM57/58 are around $100 and are generally considered great vocal mics despite their price. So there's a cheaper option. However they are dynamic, so you'll need a preamp with some balls to get the most out of them.

@Cav Emp - Cheaper doesn't equal better, in many instances (but not all).
SM57/58 is very popular with vocalists because it's a stage microphone - hypercardioid pattern, dust proof, durable and with good EMI rejection.
However as far as subjective sound quality goes, it's below AT2035. It does have its use in studios as its sound became industry standard over the years.
Still, for capturing "ethnic" nuances, details have to be there. In that case, 2035 is IMHO better option. :)
