Thanks g-d. If someone asked people whether they want to evolve, we still would be in the Stone Age. Shut up and reconcile with the progress.

its retard, because windows updates, tends to make performances worse, i updated once my notebook and with the update came so BS, which tried to improve the performance, guess what the cpu(dual core) was on 100% everytime, i couldnt even write something on that thing, because the fan was annoying loud and the whole system was sluggish, from that day i stopped using windows update. i have it deactivated and i install only updates i really need. SP1 tend to work fine for me.

Where's "imho"? Why me, my friends (musicians, designers, gamers), many other random people never had any problems with any updates (And in general with any MS products including Vista (exception win XP - just typical "mustdie" with self destruction algorithm))?

    There are two possible answers:

    1) [IMG]

    2) [IMG]

    Peace.

sure, the problem was this service was redundant, it should improve the performance of the system, while it made it only worse.

to the time the notebook was 1 year old and it was able to run a pretty big prject in ableton with around 70 channels.
    testing win10 pro now.

the same you can in windows 8/8.1 and 7 and therefore no windows 10 update for you, so the whole link above is total BS!

Just took an inventory and this household has 3 laptops and 2 desktops on Win 7, and 1 desktop and 1 tablet on Win 8.1 so they better honor their pledge to release an upgrade ISO to save me some bandwidth.

Still, don't know how many - if any - of these machines will be upgraded and you can be sure those upgrades won't occur until I'm sure the software and USB devices those machines use will continue work. How many of you are using devices that manufacturers consider obsoleted and will never see another driver update. I still keep a working XP machine (with a couple more in the basement as backups) because many of my hardware synths have editing software that never progressed beyond XP and can't be convinced to work on 7.

Of course many of my machines never see the internet so forced auto updates will never be a problem for them but there is one more thing to consider. Micro$oft has stated Windows 10 will be the last of the numbered operating systems and your free upgrade will last for the lifetime of that OS. 10 will be replaced by a final version that will simply be called Windows until the end of time and will be a subscription service. I doubt your computer will quit working (ala TIVO) if you don't pay but if you don't pony up you will probably never receive another update.

We all know that support for 7 ends in 2020 and support for 8 ends in 2023. Wouldn't surprise me if support for 10 ended before both of those and the forced updates migrate you to the subscription version. I'm sure that's what MS wants but reality would be a mass migration to Linux.

Trolling? Is that an attack word? Where is respect for fellow users and follow the rules?

I post facts about home and pro editions. I made no claims that updater service can or can not be disabled. I point out that now disable update has value of $99 pro update. You think MS will allow simply disable service in future?

Turn on your anti-asshole auto updater, you see outdated.

It's not like he made it up, it was in Microsoft's own press release.

I really don't see that happening at all until OEMs force Lunix on us in mass.

There's a joke in the Linux community that every year, that this year will be the "year of the linux desktop". Of course, that never really happened (a mass migrtion to linux). Nevertheless, there has been a slow trickle of people migrating to linux. Those aren't consumers, those are typically power users that have been pondering over it after a while (i'm guessing). But they make up the minority of home users.

I know DELL sells PCs with Linux preinstalled for budget-conscious chinese purchasers. That may be an option online, idk.

What's more likely (and is happening perhaps) is a slow migration to OSX because OSX is actually more commonly sold in stores (aka, macs). (Or perhaps Android due to OEM's dissatisfaction with W8? But Android is Linux anyway so...)

    It already happened...

A few Years ago, I gave to my wife, that knows zero about computers, an old laptop with the old Linux mint 13 and compiz.

No way she would go back to windows.
I asked her recently: "Do You want I put Win 8 on it ?"
    - NO! , and do not dare to touch it! :excl:
(and most of her friends use linux too)

As I see it, Linux is really great for the "home user" (Facebook, Mail, Youtube, few documents, some Photo editing and that kind...)

...and btw. I use Linux too... If it were not for audio apps, I would completely get rid of Win Years ago.

IMHO, it is only the OEM gang and "corrupt" developers that are keeping Microsoft from failing

I don't think that is why. Like it or not, Windows 7 is an excellent and stable OS, and so will be Windows 10. What I wonder is how MS gets away with their hit and miss strategy. There was windows 95 that dominated the pc world, hit. Then they came up with 98 and millenium, big miss. Then again xp, major hit. Vista, even bigger miss. Windows 7, hit. Windows 8, miss. You get the picture.

I don't think this 'mass migrtion' has alredy happened. It's more of a slow trickle. It may be for your family, but certainly not for others.

Also, why develop for an OS with little relevant marketshare and a bit of segmentation? Developers typically waste time getting little money if they developed for Linux. It's more economic to develop for OS X & W32 instead.

(Developing for) Linux is not without its corruption, either. See https://blogs.gentoo.org/lu_zero/2015/07/09/my-fun-starts-now/

I think that's a bit of an oversimplification. All I have to say, is that The previous OS becomes less of a miss, once the next OS is unveiled.

I'm running Vista on one PC atm. I'ts not that bad. It brings a bit of security over XP, and some nice new APIs for developers. I made a simple app last year, and i was surprised that it requires post-XP APIs. Vista is the 'first of the modern OSes' as I'd like to call it, and the last OS to offer a separated quicklaunch+current apps taskbar.

8(.1) is now looking not so bad after W10 ditches WMC & optional updates w/o regedit for consumers.

Actually, M$ is n ot the only one to get away with alternating misses. Some movie franchises also follow this pattern, and I'm sure other product lines as well.

Actually they're doing it to test their patches on the unwitting public in an effort to identify the plentiful bugs before they hit the business world. So in essence you have all now become lab rats. I am not on their side because if you know anything about Microsoft then you know that they are horrid at patch deployment. If you look at how many patches had to be pulled and/or reissued this year you would surely not be making this comment. As a network administrator I can tell you that this is their Achilles heel and you have to be mad to have auto-update on. I have seen this cause so many problems over the years.

Registry? Group policy? Great if you're a power user or a network admin. Everyone else doesn't want to mess with this nonsense. In my opinion it was a very underhanded move on their part.

Of course you can stop them, just disable the service.

Or you change the policy with gpedit.msc

Computer configuration -> administrative templates -> all settings -> configure automatic updates -> notify for download and notify for install

The update process still sucks though. It's a huge downgrade from win 7.

About this windows 10 lark. Once you let that little white GWX icon onto your machine it is a REAL nightmare getting rid of.

Yes you can stop it from showing by hiding it, but it's STILL there.
You can goto windows/system32 and MOVE the GWX Folder, say to your desktop, in the hope of deleting it. But NO
You can goto your registry and try and delete all references to it there. BUT nope they are protected.
You can run reg cleaners and CCleaner ALL to no avail
You can use Malwarebytes' File Assassin which is AWESOME, but even that wont remove the files(8) in folder at boot up time

What you have to do is take control from Original creator of those files. Easiest way is here:-

    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...ership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/

(Click on the take ownership Zip folder near bottom of page)

Rhodes, I don't agree with you with regards to linux. I have tried to install it many times on my older machines (XUbuntu,Lubuntu,Ubuntu etc etc)

i never once got a clean install without some kind of problem.

But, I LOVE that quote of yours.

ha ? pretty sick.. they better figure how to actaully give people value for that, or it could be signing their own death warrant.
There's hardly a better way of pissing off masses of people than giving them charges every month for superfluous ( or zero ) benefit..

just hearing it makes me want to migrate.. to what I don't know...but just away from Winblows....

what a hoot from a company that has made a history of abusing its customers with half baked releases and intrusive policies...
    some billionaires never learn... :dunno:

makes good business sense to consistently bet on the ignorance and complacency of those masses... eh
