Hey!
I'm entering the world of synths and literally have no idea what I'm doing and that is exciting and fresh with my background being mainly in rock music. I've had this sound in my head all day and i'd like to work out how to produce it. The closest sound I can think of is from the chorus of Ellie Goulding - Figure 8. It's most prominent in the mix on the first count of bars 1, 3, 5, 7 in the chorus. I hear some distorted bass and piano and I'm not sure what else. Any idea? Thanks.

Well yeah kinda, I actually saw this thread when you opened it, but didn't reply for several reasons
I actually can't watch the video in Germany because of German law stuff and a quick google-seach didn't help much so I had to "buy" the song first
Second is that I'm not 100% sure what you're looking for, but I made a quick replication of the bass that might help you.

First part is from the chorus and 2nd part is some bridge where you can hear the bass better.

I'm not sure what exactly you're looking for but I think the sidechained bass + piano make up most of the sound.
Or maybe I'm just missing something obvious.

Distorted/saturated supersaw (or stacked supersaws in different octaves) with portamento (or pitchbend). EQ to taste, usually to roll off some high-, and low-end.
Side-chain compress i to a ghost "kick".
