Hey I'm back with less explosive VSTs. Maize fixed up my issues and here are lots o instruments that don't require Kontakt and shouldn't shatter your speakers. Plus a friend made nice GUIs, so they look less crummy too. OK so we ain't 8dio, but we cost less too. The entire Sonatina orchestra and pianos and stuff.

The Sonatina instruments are great - however, the link to the AU of the Cellos yields a download of the VST, not the AU.

Ironically I have a timpani from the Sonatina Orchestra and forgot to upload it. And now it is up.
I'm not sure how good it sounds. The timpani is an odd instrument. This has more the single hits on the low end of your keyboard and the rolls on the higher end, so you might want to experiment.

You might also try the SFZ version of the free Ivy Steinway. It is huge, but sounds amazing for free.

If you don't have an SFZ player give this one a go...

If it helps I made a little list of freebies that don't require kontakt here...
