Many music software apps and sample packs say they come on a DVDR, but they are 5 or more gigabytes, as an example: the new Omnisphere 2 disk sets. How can something 5 gigabytes or more fit on a DVDR. Don't you have to use double-sided DVD's, which are much more expensive?

DVD-9 or dual layer = 2 layers of standard DVD-5 that means basically Dual layer have a capacity of 8.5GB or recordable 7.95 ish!

why you want to burn it? its cheaper to buy a 500GB extern HDD, where you can save this download as backup.

I was wondering the same thing but I guess the OP maybe meant production cost for the original libraries?

yes that could be, well i think it was cheaper for spectrasonics, because in the end the HDD isnt so full like the one NI used for Kontakt Ultimate.

Thanks for straightening this out for me. However, I have another question: Will Omnisphere 2 fit on a 128GB USB flash drive, and will it load onto my HD from the flash format. I seem to remember that some multi-disk apps will only load sequentially from disks. Thanks, again everyone.

1 broken dvd gives you a loss of 4 or 8 GB. 1 broken HDD gives you a loss of 500 GB.

Gotta agree a disc is a better backup alternative to a hdd, after learning the hard way, blue ray burners and discs are cheap enough to take away a lot of the hassle of loading in loads of dvd's when going about the process as well, as well as not taking up so much storage space
