Been making music for about 2 years now. Still haven't figured that out

I personally think it's good to switch between a bunch of genres because each specific genre will teach you particular things.

For example I learned a lot about layering doing orchestral music and learned all about compression doing electronic music. Now I'm able to apply my knowledge to both genres.

So I say keep doing all kinds of music and enjoy

Make music you love and let marketing sort out which box to put it in.

Trying to pick a genre is a thing. Trying to define what genre you compose is another thing. Just letting it go is the answer.
Still wanna specialize in one genre? Then, ask your friends, which songs of yours do they liked, which songs have more listeners, make a poll about it and ask your listeners.

Nothing need to change here, keep going that route. Music has too much to offer, it is a Crime to limiting yourself to one genre, it only show you are very narow minded and this is completely opposite to what music really is about, which is nothing about genres.

MrAnonymous, 'genre', if you look up the definition just means a 'style' or 'category' and you can take the meaning of genre as a very wide meaning such as 'dance' within which there are many 'sub-genres' (look that one up too). Maybe your concern is not justified. If the genres you think you keep jumping between are all primaily in the 'dance' genre then your jumps are not such great leaps after all. The jumps could be just you experimenting, and that's great. Everything we create starts off as an idea in our minds. We 'see' the desired effect of our listeners in our minds. Could be relaxing, could be dancing, could be singing to our music. Are your ideas so different or is there something common to them all? You could also create a new sub-genre to accommodate your music.

Yeah Anonym I also have many musical influences and I suggest you to put all your influences on one song that's what we call ''Fusion'' and create your authentic Sub-Genre  Be Original Bro

  11. Genre is such a 20th century paradigm in my thoughts due to the seeming fact that we all teeming and influenced with an onslaught of vibrating air from both so many novel and established directions at once. There is becoming less and less so a pure anything any more, all is becoming all mixed up in the gobbilygook. Blame it in Columbus as the major influence of intermingling of the world's species, both plant and animal and all the stuff that has gone on ever since, including and perhaps especially music. Call your music anything you like, but just make sure you call it in for dinner because music needs a nice rounded meal in order to grow big and strong.

You don't. You do what you feel. It's a good thing to be able to do many things, and doing them your way.

Study the genres is obligatory if you want to make music.
Thats include counterpoint and not just a tutorials like "How to make EDM tropical.
Most of the limitation of "pop"music makers is about not know music history, and by this I mean how to do every style.
With no culture or skills, focusing just a genre results in poor music.
To oxygenate the brain we need fresh air, different musics, knowing technically what you like/dislike in each music you listen.
People that do not like to study always think that music is subjective, but I think thats a amateur thought. *yes*

I think you are lumping music theory in with "genre." To my brain, music theory is entirely independent of genre or style. For example both Bach and Prince use the same semichromatic scale. Totally different styles, same 12 notes. Or for more specificity, I play counterpoint theory when I play classical piano or metal guitars.

Do you compose a fugue or an invention? Hou many voices?
    Integral Serial music?
Counterpoint is much more then a chit chat.
I take care of the graduation studants of music as monitor for counterpoint and fugue courses. I correct every composition/exercise made there.
Analise the form and how it is composed it a ear to enrich you compositions, its not a style. Its a tool not an improvisatiom.
Bach and Prince do not have any compostion, maybe only the well tempered tune.
The problem with "to my brain thing"is that you marginalize yourself before knowing other things. Why? Because in this way each brain cannot connect with others with real words or music and is condemned to repeat the past.
A professional must be fluid in music, with many tools that he can have. Improvisation (like most pop music) is obviously good, but you must be master with conscient music, not something that you trow away.
Search why Tchaikovsky is/was referred as a no serious composer, he only made beauty/boring things.

While I think I understand your meaning and agree that musical proficiency is essential; I don't believe that you have really addressed my arguments at all. For a more concrete example I refer you to the band Symphony X (whose compositional skills can not be doubted). They literally (not figuratively) cover Mozart note for note. One is classical; the other is metal. Point being: music theory and genres are not related.

Music theory is how music works as a language. Genre is how music works as a style. They are two completely different things.
