What kind of synthesis is this? Granular?

I've been trying to wrap my head around this sound for a couple of weeks. My best (well, only) guess is that it's some kind of granular synthesis, sampled then pitched. But to be fair I don't really know much about FM synthesis yet.

To me, it sounds more like a ''stutter'' FX added later in the chain than a synthesis thing, granular synthesis has an 'alien' stutter feeling, while this is just some LFO/mute-unmute wobbling sound. To get a similar sound, experiment with a wavetable synthesiser (such as Serum or Massive, which will held more dense sounds) and add an LFO to the master volume with a fast (1/8-beat or faster) rate.

Also try modulating the LFO with a modwheel or Midi CC, (or Midi Learn the LFO control) so you have control over the wub-wub.

You could just automate the LFO for a similar rhythm in that video.

You'll be perfectly capable of achieving this sound with Wavetable:

some other things that could get the similar sound a bit more interesting:

try modulating the pan of the instrument
use some gritty distortion plugin or distortion on the synth you'll be using, I'd use Zebra 2 and add a Shaper -> Crush or T-Drive,
try modulating a Low pass filter in unison with the LFO
Try to add the LFO to the specific oscillator instead of the master, you could add another oscillator that will fill in some gaps you can't achieve with the other...
IF you use Massive, try modulating the position (I think it's normally the first knob)...

If you are a fan of Massive, I'll be happy to mock up a little test for you if you have trouble. :)

Wow. Now that you guys say it I can really hear what you're saying about the mute/unmute. I guess because it sounded like many little pieces strung together I thought granular.

@Brandon Spendlove - Just so happens that Massive is the only synth I can really say I know thoroughly (well that and Twin2, but how much learning does it really take to know any Fabfilter product? That's the beauty of them). But while I understand the controls of Massive, I'm still green with synthesis itself. What property of that sound (and/or of wavetable synths) makes you say that? I mean I get the idea of morphing between waveforms, just not what it has to do with this sound.

When I get to my music computer later I'll try and recreate this and probably come back here gushing thanks.

I'd mainly focus on which sound to use, I personally think you'll have a good chance of getting a similar sound using: Groan II or III I think, I can't remember...

but I personally say the position because it will give it a tiny bit more detail than just whacking an LFO and putting some distortion on :)

The basics would be distorted and lowpassed low supersaw (in that order), with a key-triggered envelope (env1) controlling the speed of another envelope (env2) that controls the volume/amplitude and/or the lowpass filter cutoff. Env2 also seem to be controlling a notch filter.

That's the basics. Then there is alot of fine-tuning, layering, reversing, automation, etc.

Thanks man! I'm gonna try this out right now. Fell asleep at the computer last night like as soon as I got home and didn't really get a chance to test what anyone said.

Edit: Nice! I can get reasonably close (as in, the dynamics and filtering of it but not the actual coolness of the sound. that'll take me a while). Never guessed that sort of rapid-fire effect could be as simple as a saw so low that you can hear it cycle. I like that on-off effect too. There's something it would've taken me a while to come up with on my own. Side note: I really love/hate Massive's envelopes. All the options are great. I don't know why the attack knob has to be 1/3 of the way up before you get past a few miliseconds. Seems really disproportionate and throws me off.

    I love this place.

You were spot on! Groan III is great for this sort of sound.

That sound is the typical dubstep/ drum n bass bass sound, with the typical lfo moduations and pitch bends. It is easy to recreate. You should check out BassGorilla on Youtube or BassGorilla.com. He has video free video tutorials that are really good.
