Well, it depends on the source sound, or what you are trying to achieve. Doesn't it?

One can go quite a long way with just an EQ and compressor (and EQ). That's my first thing to try.

    @ James Producer,

As rightly and wisely said by 'Baxter' : "it depends on the source sound, or what you are trying to achieve." *yes*

Personally, I don't think that's a matter of preference (at least in my own case, of course !), but rather a matter of 'Audio' Source Material to be processed. *yes*
I mean, I'll tend to use 'Single' Compression on a per 'Track', or per 'Instrument' basis, whereas I'll rather use 'Multiband' Compression on a Full Mix, Mastering Process, eventually for a 'Group' of 'Tracks' or 'Instruments', mainly due to the fact of the 'Multiband' possibilities to act on some Frequency Bands (hence its name !). *yes*

A multiband compressor is more a dynamic eq than a compressor.

If your goal is to tame the overall dynamics of a signal -> compressor

If you want to change/tame the tone of a signal -> multiband compressor

I Believe the golden rule is Compressor for tracking and Multi for mixing  so both

I think of compressors like this: if I'm trying to gel a buss, or tame some specific channel, I use a single-band compressor. When I don't really have control over the source elements but need to tame something within a larger mixdown, I use a multiband compressor. Generally, I use multibands for fixing mistakes more than for creative or tonal things.
