    Mulband?

I think the EQ is for further tonal/spectrum shaping. It's just a wild guess. ;)

It is a more effective use of a mastering EQ: at this stage, EQ is best used to give the track some excitement for the listening experience (note that hi/low shelves are used to resemble an hearing weighted curve most of the times), and passive EQ is preferred (such as a Pultec EQ) to avoid damaging the audio.
Furthermore, there's a reason for placing it after the comp: it would change the dynamic approach of the compressor if it was placed before it and thus limiting the ''exciting'' effect created.

    Hope this helps!!

To compensate for the action of the compressor, which can make the sound dull (especially digital compressors). A multiband compressor can 'flatten' a mix if not used very carefully, so, the eq would help bring some naturalness back. Not only passive eqs, any hi-end unit (the so called 'mastering' eqs) can do the job. Passive eqs have very broad curves, which is why they are considered 'musical'. It's less obvious that there's an eq there, if it's consciously used.

I always wonder WHY people just don't try the techniques for themselves before asking in threads… use your ears first, not the internet!

Of you have Waves plugins installed, try the L316 multiband which should eliminate the need for a eq in my experience. It is available as mono or stereo.
The other option is to use a high quality exciter after the compressor (it's most comman use).

Multi band compression acts on different portions (frequencies) of the spectrum and it can often be somewhat aggressive, the passive EQ after it helps to restore the sound.

    offtopic,
"use your ears first, not the internet"

That should be a meme going around honestly. well said!

as the "why" - my view is people who say that come from a technical viewpoint/leftbrain thinking. They feel the need to "must know" the correct way before they even start.

ofcourse thats just my view :)

    have a great sunday!
