Do you guys think that someone with no music background (never played any instrument, never had any interes in music (till 2 years ago)) got any chance of makin good music after going to production school that teaches you all the music theory stuff and shows you in depth the whole DAW and gets you throught the makin song progress?

    Sure my friend,

I started with no musical knowledge 3 years ago and i loved so much this passion that even if i started from scratch, my brain assimilated very quickly and i bet that, if you love what you do, you will really get better and better, over time.
Just seek evolution, never stop on a certain level. Always ride your paths to a better "yourself", try to learn stuff which you don't know yet instead of getting stuck in the comfort zone of a certain easy level where you know everything. Never get satisfied with yourself, that's the secret. Regarding your passion, just keep craving for more for your brain , the rest will come naturally without even noticing it, but later... well... when you'll look behind, you'll see the difference! :mates:

If you got a good feel for music, you'll learn as you go. I wouldn't get too worried about music theory. However, there might come a point later on where you'll want to learn more about chords for example so you don't spend hours trying to come up with chord progressions

I am completely self taught in every aspect of musicianship, theory and studio work. I do have a B.Sc (hons) degree, and I suppose that does help with 'learning how to learn.'

My advice is to go for it any way that you choose .. even starting with "Music Theory For Dummies", which is what I did

  7. We all began at the beginning and all will end in the end, so what you must do in the middle is work real hard to create and learn. It will all be worth it as you see yourself grow. You already have the intellect part down with your schooled knowledge, now it is up to you and your Muse to bring it all to fruition, to let yourself be an open channel and translator to what is freely up for grabs floating around in the ether.

Yep, the hard skills are the easy part, it's the soft skills that set you apart, the creative aspect ... and for that you need very little new knowledge, as you have been exposed to music and sounds all of your life, consciously or subconsciously.

    Yeah, its never too late.

But don't fall into the trap of wanting to be an awesome song writer, mixer, producer, mastering engineer, performer, dj, theory master, sound desinger etc.
We've all done (or doing) it lol. Just concentrate on the basics and get good at it as I'm sure the course will advise. The rest will come when its required... an awesome song is great even if its poorly mixed.

Just have fun and use loops at first. Get to know your DAW without the ballache of writing melodies. When the DAW is not an issue then start looking/listening at how these loops, presets or songs were made.

You will hit several walls along the way I promise you that... but you will also have tons of fun. After 30+ years playing the guitar I am still learning and hitting walls everyday, but they get smaller and you enjoy the challenge.

    Good luck

Especially with Pop/EDM/Rock genres, you only need to know a few keys, chord progressions and scale variations.

I have a little project on the go to record the same four chord progression in different ways. I think it is a good way to learn about music.

I encourage anyone that does creative work (producing) to check this short video out. It is very motivational for me. I always refer back to this video to keep me going. Enjoy!

P.S I don't know how to imbed a video into my comments (I'm a noob)... so here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlTRYcFBkq4

"Do you guys think that someone with no music background (never played any instrument, never had any interes in music (till 2 years ago)) got any chance of makin good music"

Yes you do. You don't even need a school if you're putting enough time and seriousness in it.
The leader of my band had no music schooling or production knowledge whatsoever (he's not even sure about how a compressor work, he just use the thres' knob). He didn't even ask for attention or approval on a webforum (*). Just go on and do it.
Just man up and work at it, try and fail until it works. trusting and pushing yourself is much more important than music theory and production tip
Academic will just make you a little bit faster, but without a deadline, empiric methods work too.

    notes :
    - hans zimmer has no music school background
    - feed me isn't sure about how to use a compressor
    - ratm first album was made with a 50$ guitar
    - you can do a lot with one or two notes.

(*) he released the first album on his very own, several month later, it was in 2007. We toured extensively in 2011 and 2013, and we released 2 more albums before we stopped. he still work as producer and composer.
