    I`m currently stuck with the built in compressors in Cubase 7.5 and it`s killing me. I have been researching for what seems to be decades to find a reasonably priced compressor that could serve as my "go to" compressor. I know people have a lot of different opinions when it comes to picking out compressor`s and i know that people probably would want me to have several compressor`s for different uses, but if i had to choose one reasonably priced one to start out with, which one is your favorite that u would recommend ?

    FabFilter Pro-C (€ 149)
    Cytomic The Glue ($ 99/ ~€ 80)
    klanghelm DC8C (€ 20)

    FabFilter (Link) cuts the price if you buy more than one vst. Tokyo Dawn Records (Link) has good stuff too. Native Instruments offers some vintage compressors (Link). Google it and you will find more; anyway test it carefully before you buy one (...or more).

    @ SLimm,

    You get the point yourself !!! *yes*

    You'll certainly find more different and available 'Compressors' Plugins around that with any other kind of Effects...

    According to that, find a 'Compressor' that could suit you well and which contains at least the following Functions/Options :

    * Threshold
    * Attack
    * Release
    * Hard/Soft Knee (selectable)
    * Side-Chain (Optional) depending if you need/want that Option.

    And above all, that all these Functions/Options can be adjustable ! *yes*

    You can't go wrong with any of thantrax's suggestions.

    DMG Audio's Compassion is also quite versatile, relatively easy to use, and it sounds great.

    It would be easy to overwhelm you with choices, so I won't. The key, however, is learning how to use it properly.
    Let us know what you end up with!

    waves CLA-2A/CLA3A/76/SSL Comp - low on cpu, they sound killer.

    Klanghelm - DC8C2 - this is THE compressor.

    TDR Feedback Compressor (free ).

    T-Racks Black 76

    T-Racks White 2A

    Bus Comp/Opto Comp/Vint Comp 670 - these can be used in M/S mode

    Plugin Alliance Vertigo VSC-2
    -------------
    these are the best VST compressors in 2014 (for me ;-) ).

    I personally love The Glue for buss compression, I've read in many places that out of all the SSL emulation vst's out there, this ones gets the closest to the real deal.

    Ableton Lives's native compressor plugin. I absolutely love it. Extremely versatile and easy to use. Comes with live reading of the signal which helps you set the threshold, comes with sidechaining options, dry/wet, etc...it's perfect. My second favorite would be Fabfilter Pro-C. Sounds amazing, has tons of options and a sidechain function.

    So if you're gonna spend money on something, you can't go wrong with Fabfilter. If not, then stick with the one in Cubase, trust me it will get the job done.

    Honestly man, the simpler the better, use what you're comfortable with and don't get caught up in the hype ;)

    PuigTec-Jack Joseph Puig suite in WAVES. Sounds very much like the real Pultec we used in the studio. Very tube-ish sounding (it's rack view is already scratched and dented for ya :rofl: )----- and the easiest of all to pilot. Man, I sure would like to have a real Avalon.

    It's from VladG, a Russian developer. You've never heard of it? It's quite popular and even better it's free. You should check out our freeware directory for awesome software that you may not know about.

    I highly recommend checking out AudioSex Academy particularly Part I on mixing which will help you make the best use of whatever compressor you have on hand. Also some great suggestions in this thread any of which will suit your purposes.

    Thanks for all the answers ppl, i`m definitely gonna try out a couple of the suggested ones. I personally think the Fabfilter one looks the greatest, but i would prefer a cheaper one i think
