What is the easiest way to convert a file from one daw to another?

Say I made a project in Ableton and need to convert it so it is completely the same and openable in Logic Pro, how would I do this? Thanks.

Simply: open two DAWs on the screen, look at the details (i.e. arrangement, mixing) and do it inside the second DAW. There's no other way.

Take a look at www.aatranslator.com.au, i've not tried it myself but the guys behind it seem to know what they are doing and are very helpful. Theres a few threads over on the Reaper forums that that have posted in.

  7. The only easy way to export your project from your DAW to another is to use the SSL Pro Converter, period.
Weak point: it's x86 only.. so, depending on what platform your workin' on it could be useless

OMF was a nice attempt to cross platforms together but the development was not improved by years. If you can avoid it, do it..

I always go old school when i have to export project from daw to daw:

    - export any tracks your workin' with with locators setted from start to finish to avoid any tempo issue (raw or edited it's your choice)
    - reimport your tracks in the second daw

it could take some time, but its the most accurate way to do it...

    @ AB69,

I have a suggestion for you, maybe not so accurate as can be the '.OMF' Format option as explained above by several Users, but if all your 'Stems', 'Audio', 'MIDI',... stuff is already recorded as it must be (more or less) in the Final Result (I'm not talking about the 'Effects', the different 'Volume' & 'Pan' Settings, 'Automations'... , ONLY the several 'Stems' themselves !!!).

That suggestion is to individually 'Glue' all the Elements comprised in each of your Tracks.
With this method, all your individual recorded Tracks will be represented as 'Single Blocks', instead for example, to contain several (plenty of) separate recorded Parts within each of your Tracks.
From here, you can simply 'Export', 'Bounce', 'Render',... each of the desired Tracks to be imported within another DAWs. The only drawback is that if one (or several) or your Track(s) don't exactly start at the beginning of your Song/Project, you just must to pay attention at the exact Position ('Time Position') where these start to simply place these at the same Position within the other DAWs you plan to use... *yes*

Try it, you never know...

Ableton as a rewire slave would be the fastest and simplest

Running Ableton as rewire slave and Logic as the Master already does what everybody including you have suggested automatically. No need to worry about track lengths and starting points etc etc ..

I just render all tracks or stems/busses to 32-bit WAVs. All in one go. OMF sometimes works, sometimes not. That's from Cubase to Reaper, as people I know use nothing else. I stopped tinkering with it to save time, but occasionally I try it again.

A lot of interesting information in this thread but the reality is that the simplest and cheapest way of converting from one daw to another is to bounce the tracks to 24bit stems (unless you know that the destination daw will take 32bit).
Now of course doing so means that any dodgy xfades are now permanent as are fades and any automation (volume, pan, and mute), etc, etc - so one needs to make sure these are either sorted out or disabled if not required.

    OMF?
Seriously it would be a joke except its not in the least bit funny and don't get me started on AAF
For me, the [unnecessary] complexity of OMF, AAF and MXF make them a "Use at your own risk format." Although there are other formats that can be in the same category, these three are the worst. They are self proclaimed standards that never should have been created. Although the container format is always a standard, the methods of describing data within the container are not. They each have multiple ways of describing the same thing and since everyone has a slightly different way of doing things within the containers, they might as well not exist at all. To call them any kind of standard should be against the law. OMF is literally a format within a container format. AAF and MXF are much worse because they are a format within a container within a structured storage format.

So if you really need to use these formats (which Ableton as I recall does not) then best check that the destination daw can read them before hand and even if it does you will only convert the absolute bare essentials (or what the daw is capable of reading - assuming it can read it) using those formats.

Now if you actually want to convert from Ableton with the maximum detail then the converter you use needs to be able to read that detail from the Ableton ALS file (as I recall ProConvert won't read an Ableton ALS file) and then transform that into a format digestible by Logic. There are a number of formats that Logic will import but most are poorly supported by Logic so even if the maximum detail is written to one of these Logic supported formats then you are still at the mercy of what Logic is capable of reading.

Bottom line is that there is no one answer - the best answer depends on your particular needs and each method has a cost either in detail forgone, financial, convenience, etc as well as the limitations of the daws themselves.

Hmm so what is the easiest most efficient method?

For Ableton and Logic Pro and vice versa.

How long would these conversions typically take? Thanks.

As I said it depends on what you want to achieve - bouncing down to stems is probably the easiest but you must commit to things which may be difficult to undo
If you want all the clips in the right places which can be still edited with or without track automation (or clip envelopes depending on the daw) and markers, etc then a converter is the way to go.
A conversion from Ableton to say Reaper would contain looping info and stretch/warp details which would be able to be edited unlike stems

Depending on the size of the session and the media files and assuming a reasonably modern PC it could take seconds or a couple of minutes to convert

Feel free to contact me directly to organise a test conversion and that way you can determine the best solution for your needs

I haven't had good luck with OMF in the past , I just render all the audio clips as one long audio file for each from bar 1 beat and then drop them them in the other daw so everything lines up timing wise

If WAV, see converters like "FinalCD (Sharp)", "SoX", "iZotope RX (Sharp Linear Phase)", "dBPoweramp 15.1" - almost Full bandrange, no aliasing (about -170dB and lower, excellent for 32 bit wav audio), linear phase (no phase distortions/warps at high frequencies, less clipping). Ideal filters. As well as "eac3to", latest "Audition CS/CC", "Shibatch SSRC". Use linear phase. "Voxengo r8brain 1.5 PRO" and "Weiss SARACON" are a bit worse, but still good. Pay attention listed above higher. I know what I advice to you.

If project formats to convert - there is one program to convert from one DAW to another. Watch my threads, there is one dedicated to this. It is not cracked, but you can buy it. Not expensive, very cheap. Support almost all formats, almost all DAWs
