Christmas is coming and I thought ask Santa some music gear. But after some thought, I realized that I had no idea what was useful or not.
For the moment i have an old desktop PC, 10$ speakers, and this headphone : http://tinyurl.com/l9evo8r

This is not the dreamed equipment, isn't ?

I don't know if any stuff on this planet is useful but :

What do you recommend? (Nothing can also be a good proposition )
Is there a thing that you just can't live without ?

What's your budget (or your parents budget....) ?

First thing you need is a decent audio interface, with low latency.

Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB

PreSonus AudioBox USB

M-Audio M-Track USB

Should be good enough to start with

Then you should get a Midi controller/keyboard. Range is big. Check out here to see the options.

Last thing you should get is a pair of headphones with decent sound. Or a couple of active monitors.

With these 3 things you don't need anything else to start creating your own music.

 

don't worry about buying lots of equipment, ask Santa Claus for a basic midi keyboard controller to connect to your computer, then you are ready to go

By priority order:

First get some (even basic) lessons of Harmony, so you can understand music. Price: Some hours of dedicated attention (searching into Youtube).

Then get an usb audio interface, so when you play, the sound come out on time, not 2 seconds later , then with certain DAWs (like FL Studio) you can play with your computer keyboard, but if you can it is better to have a midi usb Keyboard even a small and simple one.

Then get something decent to listen to the sound, like good headphones and/or speakers.

List just to have fun:

Keyboard: Samson Graphite M25 : 70€

Audio interface: Presonus AudioBox USB: 100€

Headphones: Audio Technica ATH-M50 X : 140€

Total: 310 €

Note: You can find Keyboard and an audio interface cheaper or better for the same price if you look at second hand market.
But I wouldn't buy second hand headphones as you'll never know how they have been used or abused, and they may be a little damaged and give you some distortion in the lower frequency that you may not notice at first site if you are not accustom to this kind of products.

To go serious:

Keyboard: Arturia Keylab 61: 400€

Audio USB interface: Focusrite Forte: 335€

Good headphones(ex: AKG K 712 Pro), 340 €

Good speakers(Ex: Event Opal). begin from 2500 € pair

Total: 1075 € without speakers
3575 € with speakers

These are only examples, and obviously there are a lot of other possibilities, even though in both cases I've tried to choose taking care of the relation price quality.

But i have a questions :
What is exactly an audio interface? Sorry for this dumb question but i'm (really) a beginner.
And for the midi controller i think to an Ableton Push. What do you think about that?

Do not worry about it had been on my list for a long time.

Oh yeah and a last thing : I do not want to release my music or anything. In this case headphones and audio interface are it still useful?

 

What is an Audio interface?

Look at this one (bon, le mec il perd de l'huile un peu, mais c'est pas grave )

You can chose any thing you feel comfortable with, but still remember that music is made of notes.

It depends how much you want to enjoy your music at home, if you are happy with your little speakers and your actual headphones you can go on with them, but don't expect your music to sound well anywhere else then, not even in your best friend car sound system.

I'm even more lost at the beginning but it does not matter.
I think I'll take a small midi controller. And if in some time I feel the need: Headphones and an audio interface. For now it would be given the pearls before swine.

The most important thing you should do right now is stay in school and since you know what you want to do, pursuit it while your young, a back up plan never hurts though.
