One of those guys on the ISS had a soundcloud account. I posted it here once. It had station sounds. Docking, hatches pressurizing, toilet flushing, shower, background noises, etc. I thought it was an interesting way to get a better understanding of what that job might be like. He also mentioned how "space" has a distinctive, somewhat unpleasant aroma that you smell when you cycle the hatches. Who would have thought that? And sideshowbob.....Bart Simpson lives!

 

Donald R. Pettit (an astronaut) compares the unique space smell with hot metal, comparable to the smell produced by a welder. Other astronauts report the smell more being like a slightly burnt steak. The smell comes from burning stars. They set free odorous compounds, called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These compounds float around until eternity. On earth they can be also found in coal and oil.

One of the current ISS astronauts has recently made some nice photos. This is one of them showing the Aurora Borealis. I didn't know that this fascinating phenomenon has such gigantic dimensions.... The picture is 633x440 (size 8), for the use as background wallpaper in Kontakt:

also tried calling them on ham radio, but them those astronauts never have their damn radio switched on

 

"Cluster One" by Pink Floyd (from "The Division Bell") starts with recorded electromagnetic waves of space or something like that (you can read it on Wikipedia about their "Cluster One"). A lot of Floyd's fans were thinking that it were distortions/defects of the recording.

 

This is really cool. Some of the sounds would be great to use in a track.

I have also been unable to contact them. Although I only tried once. I have however bounced my radio signal off of the moon when it was in a good position. It didn't sound any different but it sure was fun! *yes*

When I first saw this thread I thought it said Free Audio Samples from the NSA and I was thinking it would be other people's phone calls. Now you too can use these samples in your next track.
