SGA1566 is a freeware vintage tube preamp emulation in VST/AU plugin format for Windows and Mac based digital audio workstations, released by Shattered Glass Audio.

SGA1566 is loosely based on a single channel vintage tube preamplifier. We have made some changes to the original schematic, added tone controls, and made it stereo. To achieve the most authentic analog sound, the whole circuit is simulated in real time using the high performance circuit simulator. However, this level of sound fidelity comes at a price of high CPU utilization. For cases where such a CPU hit is prohibitive, we have added a model that is significantly less CPU intensive but slightly less accurate than the circuit simulation.
Use SGA1566 to add warmth to a track, as a saturation compressor, or to add "dirt" with tube overdrive.

The plugin emulates a vintage single channel tube preamplifier, featuring two 12AX7 tube amplification stages and a two-band Baxandall equalizer which can be placed either at the input or the output stage. The plugin also features two different CPU modes, offering improved stability and compatibility with older and less powerful machines. The low CPU mode is less CPU intensive, at the cost of a slightly less accurate simulation of the tube circuit.

Shattered Glass Audio has recently released another interesting freeware plugin called Ace. It is a rather spot-on emulation of the old Fender Champ guitar amplifier, perfect for getting that creamy vintage guitar tone ITB.

Despite it already exist several 'Plugins' which emulate (or at least try !) Vintage Tube Amplifiers and the renowned '12AX7' Tube(s), it's always interesting to try new ones.
This one can perhaps be more accurate (or have different behaviour, coloration,... like the real '12AX7' Tubes themselves ! ) than other ones... *yes*

Certainly because it's the best one !!! (when talking about 'Preamplifier').
For info : the name 'ECC83' depicts the same type of Tube.

However, you can find some variations of this 'Standard' as '12AT7', '12AU7', '12AY7',... , but these have in general less gain that an original '12AX7'. *yes*
Of course, I'm talking here of 'real' Tubes, not of 'Digital Emulation(s)' !


Despite it's in 'French', the following Website can perhaps enlighten you about the '12AX7' Tubes and some of its different Variations, as well as some well renowned Brands/Manufacturers that create these...

On the Left side of that same Page and under 'LAMPES', you can find several types of 'Tubes', as well as the Manufacturers.
Simply check the Images, and if you're lucky enough to understand French, you can even get short descriptions and explanations about each of these Models.

I was thinking that this 'SGA 1566' could be a good complement *yes* to the 'ACE' Guitar Amp Simulation (also created by 'Shattered Glass Audio'), which Article was posted a few ago by myself.

Impressive freeware tube preamp for me.
All other free ones I have tried 'till now show a tendency to a muddy sound and sometimes you don't need that effect.
