i know its a noob question but i am a noob to mixing and mastering
Whats the best brick-wall / digital eq that gives clean cuts like high-pass and low-pass
i'v been using SSL duende channel strip but they replicate analog so its not a cut were i want it its more like an incremental cut till where want it

FabFilter Pro Q 2 is good for the job as it's very surgical. Great eq. *yes*

I'd like to say Izotope Ozone 5 EQ: Brickwall lopass/hipass has slightly sharper filters than ProQ2, from my preliminary tests.

    Yes.

I know 96dB/O sounds like a lot, but since Octave=doubling in frequency, a 96dB/O Lopass @4K will only go to -96dB at (2x4K=) approx 8K.

ProQ2 has a transition band of a few K @4K in 0L mode, same in LP mode.

EQ5 has a transition band of 550hz @4K in Analog mode, 100hz in LP mode.

    ProQ2 0L

NB: In ProQ2, the filter dB scale is on the left, the audio dB scale is on the right. In EQ5, on the left is the audio dB scale, on the right is the filter dB scale.

Anyway, with MOST EQs, even free ones and DAW builtin, by applying any lowpass or hipass, you should get a cleaner sound. Sharpness could play a small part, or a gentle shape could do well, or acceptable.

    @junh1024

Excellent comparison and extremely useful advice. Thank you.

Although having said that I do think the uses for brickwall filtering would be very limited and cause things to sound unnatural, but if you're looking for absolute sharpness, then there you it

That's what I was thinking, aren't gentle slopes more musical? We're talking sharp attenuation here.

Steepest filter I know (384dB/oct). Freeware. Not to be automated/modulated.

    it's free
it has a lot of filter types, etc.
there is one filter type that cuts as flat as brickwall is. Like that -> |___
High order (20), low ripple, high rejection
    type: elliptic

I've never seen brickwallier filter than this one.
If you're high-cutting at 1 kHz, there will be about 1030 Hz at -120 dB......
But will be a lot of ringing (and it is a minimum phase only)
