Hi, I was recently looking for some free RTAS plugins and I stumbled upon this developer who explains on his site why he won´t be able to develop for AAX. He tells us that Avid charges 500$ per year for allowing developers develop for AAX plugins format.

    http://www.yohng.com/software/w1limit.html

Now I understand why they completely eliminated the development of Sugar Bytes TransVST AAX wrapper plugin.

Granted, it indeed seems unreasonable, but if this developer would have explored the matter further he would have discovered that Avid waves the first year's fee.

AFAIK with RTAS was even worst, in fact never seen a freeware RTAS, except from commercial devs who already have concession to release RTAS,
and offered one freeware too to advertise their product.
Didn't expected anything better from those scumbag at avid/digi :snuffy:

yeah wow... all the other years after would still feel like it's a hold up...

I would feel extorted too if I were a developer.. it's pretty fascistic to charge an access fee like that ...what about the other customers BUYING their expensive DAW who will
have LESS choice.... it's stuff like this that makes me feel ok about NOT paying their ransom.. and instead enjoying the fruits of Audioz..

I agree completely, that's why I didn't even try the last Avid products, like ProFools and so ...

Beside I had several hardware from them, with no support, no drivers update etc...

One of many reasons ProTools is going down already. A DAW with no future. Most of my colleagues already have switched their primary DAW. Same colleagues that 3 years ago blaming me bullishness for not switching to the "DAW of the future".(i was Cubase user from 3.1 until 7.5) Now only HipHop-Producer kids (nothing against HipHop i´m a total HHHead) and people who spend many many €/$ for their hardware are sticking to that unstable crap and that uneconomic policy. Bless god i decided to roll with UADs DSP some years ago.

thats sad bro... i thought the hardware is much better the software component..

Yea! And if you wanna spend the money you would pay for ProFools 11, you'd rather go much better with a choice like Cubase.
Avid it's not just Avid, is Money Avid. "Avid" doesn't represent their products motto, but actually their own hunger and passion for making money.

I have to agree, most people (I'm not talking about high end studio business that use it cause its a standard, and use it with HD rigs)
want it just cause looks cool to use it.
I use it cause I learned on it and I find some audio editing features unbeatable, but I'm the first who hate avid and used to hate digidesign too.
I use it just for mixing, I won't use it for producing/using midi even if they point a gun at my head.
And, it's probably the only one product on earth I'm proud of using without paying (already payed enough being forced to use their crappy dongle-interfaces in the past).
I'm happy with my 10 k'd and still use it for mixing, but really can't understand all hype, it's just matter of comfort with something you know well,
nowadays most daws offers the same (and even free daws offer way more than PT).

Its unfortunate, but Avid/Digi is never going anywhere... they are ingrained into every entertainment media there is, sure there are some content providers that are taking other, better routes but by and large the music, tv, movie and video game industries are Avid. If someone had have competed with them back in the Sound Tools days we wouldn't be having this conversation. Also their ability to buy competitors is wholly ridiculous and limits choice for us and to a great degree their ability to support their own products.

AVID/Digi is only hurting themselves, i mean that way lots of freeware will be not ported for AAX, means the market smaller for PT and in the end means, PT wont be used alot.
its like Propellerheads and their shit RE. and no wonder, why lots of devs not going to add an AAX version of their plugins, like RS for example and they ignore only the requests. feels like its better to put the time into new features and code vst3 version ports. my 2 cents tot he AAX crap.

We won't know... At least their plugins format is the same as the other regular DAWs, they don't try to force you stick only to their format as ProTools and Reason do(RE/refills). I must admit though that their sin is on the Ilok2 side, but excludin this negative part from the equation, they're a lot more fair than ProTools and Reason.

Yes, Evo, I don't use Cubase, but it's true that at least, if they offer an evolution, it's not so drastic that you have to buy your plugins again.
They've created vst3 since longtime now, and still support vst2. Not like the "RTAS goes to AAX what ever inconvenient are for our customers" Avid's policy.

Exactly, they didn't excluded VST 2.4 yet and i don't think they'll gonna do it any soon.
