I use Foobar2000.

And hey, I hate foobar's interface too... BUT I use it for one simple reason: CPU USAGE. Foobar is the only player (besides XMPlay) that play songs and can stay at 0% on cpu. And this is very important to me... I hate cpu hogs apps..

 

Being trying to skin foobar2000 all morning... What a pain in the ass. It only accepts .fth themes not .fcl like the one you showed Catalyst.

 

Now you understand why I hate foobar, everything is a problem. There should be an instructions.txt file in the package itself that explains how to install it.

 

Their is but it's incorrect.. Oh well not important anyway just wanted to try it out.

 

They probably introduced some changes in the latest versions. I highly recommend reading the posts on that DeviantArt link and if necessary simply ask and I'm sure the guy will help you out. Also he probably has an exe file but DeviantArt doesn't allow them to upload those anymore.

Strange, I unzipped the 7z-file, renamed the bck-file to exe. After running the exe, a pdf file with the instructions opened, I had no problem with importing the fcl file. I used it with the portable version and it worked perfect!

But I reverted back to the original Foobar, because SkinOne defeats the purpose of Foobar being lightweight on CPU...

But it's great to know there's a good alternative skin.

 

Yeah some of the flashier skins are like that. MusicBee looks good and is pretty lightweight. Still most modern computers should be able to run decent with most of today's audio players. Only time it should be an issue is if you're doing some intensive CPU tasks during use.

 

as a simple music player, nothing beats foobar.

as a media library software, nothing beats mediamonkey.
maybe you get why i´m stating this if i quickyl describe my setup:

the starting position was: many different computers in the household, one large music collection on the server. every computer should be able to access the same music library in the same way.
our music library is very heterongenic. many, many different albums (jazz, pop, etc for me; rock, metal etc for my wife), a large collection of different samplers, discographies, classical music, audio books, podcasts. not to mention all the techno mp3s i collect, being a dj for 20 years now. really everything together in one big pile.

the way to go was just go to the specific location with the file manager and play what you wanted to play. but that was just too 90s to continue with ;)

so, i installed mediamonkey on all of our pcs, the media center in the living room as well as my studio pc, all the laptops and basically every pc i want to listen music on.
the database is located on the server and accessed by all the clients.
the first big task was to scan the whole library and then tag everything in the same logic. that really was a hazzle since my wifes collection was a former itunes collection and the tagging and file/directory structuring itunes does is just a big piece of nightmarish crap.

the great thing about mediamonkey is that you can configure everything.
one of the major drawbacks, every other media library software had that i tried, was that if you opened the library, everything was displayed. sure, there where filters by genre etc., but if i wanted to listen to, lets say cafe del mar xi, everything was displayed in the first place and i had to apply the filter to get where i wanted to. all the rock albums, podcasts, classical music, everything.
with media monkey, there are a few predefined collections, and you can add your own ones.
so now i´ve got something like albums, classical music, audio books, podcasts, samplers, rock etc, and of course my techno records collection.
everything comfortably browsable with no interference at all.

now, the next hurdle the library software had to tackle: as mentioned, i'm a techno dj and i allways wanted a library software, to really manage my collection.
mediamonkey has the ability to tag from discogs - so i was (for the first time ever) able to really get a grip to my collection. it stores all the stuff you really need as a collector in the tags like record label and catalog id. and i configured my techno library, so it's sorted by labels. this is really great.

if that weren't enough yet, there's more! it syncs our mobile devices via the wireless network. and it does it for every mobile device individually. so my wife gets the music she wants on her phone, mediamonkey downloads the podcasts i've subscribed to automatically and sends them on my phone (guess what - it's a podcatcher, too!) and sends different stuff again to the tablet etc.

it's just incredible what this piece of software can do.

yes. i paid for it. but there simply isn't any other software that could have accomplished my tasks and it's worth every penny.

 

Until today I was using MediaMonkey because of its ability to multi-tag songs, but as I see that MusicBee can do it too and it's free, I'll give it a try. Thank you Catalyst for this valuable info.

 

Yea i done all of the above but it still didn't work. What version of foobar2000 do you got? I got v1.3.3.

Import the file DarkOne v4.0.fcl from the folder
...\foobar2000\themes\DarkOne_v4.0 via File → Preferences → Display → Columns UI → Main tab → FCL importing and exporting → Import.

Dont have the Display → Columns UI → Main tab → FCL option only import theme.

 

Does any of those media players use ASIO driver?

Before I installed DarkOne in the right folder, Columns UI wasn't available to me.

I made a video on how I install DarkOne (in my sandbox because I want to keep the original Foobar).

First you see me installing DarkOne in the Foobar folder (the folder = 'Foobar installed' and contains the portable version). It's important that you install DarkOne in the same folder.

When I start Foobar the first time after installing DarkOne, it will ask to choose Columns UI. You will see in the video that when I'm about to select it, the pdf-manual of DarkOne pops up automatically.

After that, you see me import the FCL file.

For audio its audiogate because its asio and for movies potplayer this is not asio.

The Coloumns UI is an alternative user interface and doesn't come installed per default. Download it here http://yuo.be/columns.php and copy the .dll to the foobar2000\components folder. Then next time you start foobar a popup will ask which user interface you want to use. The DarkOne theme looks cool, but not worth the extra cpu use (on my shitty old pc). Even worse, the shape of the panels in DarkOne makes the spectrum analyzer completely useless.
