Suno data obtained in a hacking incident has exposed that the AI music generator was trained by scraping songs and lyrics from online audio platforms, including YouTube Music, Deezer, and Genius.

Suno has been the subject of several lawsuits that allege it used copyrighted materials to train its AI models [which Suno alleges falls under fair use].

Materials shared with 404 Media reportedly back up those allegations. The data includes Suno source code from 2023 and 2024, alongside scraping instructions to pull audio files from YouTube Music, Deezer, Genius, Pond5, Jamendo, Freesound, and the International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP). Other leaked code reportedly suggests that Suno used a third-party company called Bright Data to scrape music from YouTube, and seemingly searched for acappella versions of songs on the platform to source vocal-only audio.

A file for YouTube Music notes that Suno had consumed 2,013,545 YouTube Music clips at the point it was last updated (2024).

 

What else would they have done?

Yeah, right? Copyright only applies in magnitudes of power. The size of a John Schmoe is several magnitudes lower than a multi billion dollar company backed by trillion dollar venture capital, so copyright doesn't apply to them. They will suck any media dry while lobbying to make it legal (for them) to do so. But God knows what would happen to John Schmoe if he makes a hit with some stolen chords...

Exactly. That is what makes the AI conversation on this forum feel so ironic to me.

This community exists alongside cracked software, stolen samples, presets, and tools people normally would have to pay for. Most people here have probably found a way to justify using those things. But when AI enters the conversation, suddenly everything becomes about theft and permission.

There are real concerns around AI, but I think some of the reaction is also emotional. When something that took years to learn can suddenly be done by almost anyone, it can feel like your skill or identity is being threatened. That is understandable, but it is worth being honest about, especially before taking the moral high ground.
