Spotify has removed more than 75 million “spammy tracks” from its platform over the past year, the streaming giant revealed today as it announced a suite of new policies for managing AI-generated content on its service.

The figure was disclosed during a press briefing where executives outlined a three-pronged approach to combat AI-enabled fraud while supporting legitimate artistic use of artificial intelligence tools.

“In the past 12 months alone, a period marked by the explosion of generative AI tools, we’ve removed over 75 million spammy tracks from Spotify,” the company confirmed in its official blog post announcing the measures.

The announcement comes as the streaming industry grapples with an unprecedented influx of AI-generated content.

Rival platform Deezer recently reported that it now receives over 30,000 fully AI-generated tracks daily, marking a sharp increase from the 20,000 figure it reported in April and the 10,000 it disclosed in January when it first launched its proprietary AI detection tool.

According to Deezer, up to 70% of plays for these fully AI-generated tracks have been detected as fraudulent, with the company filtering these streams out of royalty payments.

Spotify’s new framework comprises three key policies targeting different aspects of AI-related challenges, including:

Improved enforcement of impersonation violations
A new spam filtering system, and
AI disclosures for music with “industry-standard credits”.

Spotify explained the reasoning behind the introduction of these measures in the blog post published today: “At its best, AI is unlocking incredible new ways for artists to create music and for listeners to discover it,” the company said.

A year ago, I read an article that said the next big thing in the consumer economy is the rise of professional 'shit sifting'. In other words, companies and private businesses that maintain small inventories/indices of products and content, manually curated by real humans, free from AI slop and crappy knock offs that the big guys (YouTube, Amazon, Temu, Spotify, Facebook, X, ..) aren't filtering out well enough.

I think they're right.

My motivation to find music (70% generic token-core), engage with social media (too many posts tuned up by AI, you know who you are), buy products (37 pages of not respecting my search terms), watch new channels YT (endless flood of Wikipedia articles rewritten and narrated by AI trained on big Tubers' voices) is close to zero at this point. The big platforms have become borderline unusable, no matter how hard you try to wall up against the flood of shit.

 

So, instead of banning them, they filter the "fraudulent" out of royalty payments but they allow the songs to grab ads revenue for them. What a joke. "I won't pay you for your AI slop, but I'm going to keep paying me for your AI slop". They deserve whatever is coming.

Also Spotify is a cancer for the musician with or without AI slop on top.

for those of you just tuning in heres how it works. you pay suno to make "your" song. you pay distrokid to distribute "your" song to spotify. spotify has the suno codes, so spotify keeps all income generated by "your" song and then cancels it. all 3 companies are intertwined with spotify at the helm. spotify makes money from all 3 steps of the process. you make nothing and have nothing to show for it but a deficit bank account, blacklisted alias and lifelong shame. but youre more clever and somehow special and no one will ever find out your secret. you go girl!

Didnt Spotify recently make an official announcement of a deal with their partner major labels to offer and allow purchased premium add-on user prompted AI remixes within the platform AI tool, to be streamed at the platform, for which all royalties are paid to Spotify and their partners? These crazy contradictive one way ethics, loopholes and angles Daniel Ek continues to exploit and get away with are incredibly reprehensible. What a racket! Literally.

Hopefully noone is actually hinging determining what is AI-involved music on the "AI Fingerprinting" mentioned in the above video.

Soon enough, many people will have access to GPUs powerful enough to not use cloud-based AI platforms like Suno. Just like some people in music are hoping that anti-AI training poisoning of files and other adverserial AI tactics in general will work, people running local models will figure out a way to bypass such fingerprinting. Who might be able to do that? Might the "big music" industry machine of major labels have an interest in successfully convincing everyone to writeoff a technology voluntarily, all the while using it themselves? They would never enter into such business deals with these online retailer platforms, right?

The people on the tech bro side saying "it's inevitable" about AI, and the current anti-AI bandwagon side, are both just drinking 2 different flavors of the koolaid.
