Hi, I’m considering buying Universal Audio’s VOG since I’m gradually switching over to their ecosystem, and I requested the 14-day trial. I’ve been using Nembrini Audio’s Bass Resonance, which I found on the sister site, and I love it—I’ve been using it for about a month now. But since this opportunity came up, I decided to run a test:

A BUS (not the final master bus) where I have 1 kick drum with enough low end for EDM, and 1 simple bass track played in eighth notes to be as accurate as possible in a scenario where, without any EQ or sidechaining whatsoever, I have both elements playing together at the same time—whether it’s the drop of a song or a post-drop section where they continue to work together. This is at 120 bpm to allow for a relaxed listening experience and a clear understanding of how the two elements function. On each track containing these elements, I have one active plugin for each, recorded onto a separate audio track from this BUS.

To my surprise, NA BR isn’t bad—it just works differently, clearly highlighting the kick drum’s impact much “better,” for example… but if you agree with me, you’ll hear something odd in the sub—as if there’s a lack of clarity.

As for the VOG, I’m surprised to find that while there isn’t an exaggerated punch—though it’s definitely there—what stands out most is the “clarity” of the two elements, meaning how they coexist in a similar or close frequency range.

I think I'm going to keep both tools and use them for different purposes, but there's no doubt that VOG is more useful than BR for mixing.

I used a translator so that my test would be as clear as possible using the specified words.

I'm posting the final audio files so you can listen to them for yourselves, and if you have any comments, I'll be happy to read them. Thanks in advance. For a quick and accurate comparison, I recommend this website: upload the files and use the up and down arrows to switch between them,
Remember to close your eyes and concentrate while wearing your headphones! :

Several users tested UAD VOG and they found that it nulls with a digital stock EQ resonant HPF, so I suggest you to keep that money for something else

    NEVER NULLED AT 100% NOPE

The VOG essentially performs two operations simultaneously: [1]
    1. Sweeping Resonance: A sharp peak (bell boost) that can be swept from 20 Hz to 300 Hz.
    2. Steep HPF: A steep -24 dB per octave roll-off for everything below the resonant peak frequency. [1, 2, 3]
    The Null Test Reality
In audio production forums like Gearspace and Reddit, users and engineers have varying results when attempting to null the plugin. [1, 2]
    • The Case for a Null: Some engineers have reported near-perfect phase cancellation. By using a DAW stock EQ (such as the stock EQ in Cubase or Melda MAutoDynamicEQ) to set up a steep HPF with a specific resonant Q-boost, they achieved a null. This demonstrates that the digital plugin's foundation is indeed a mathematical EQ curve rather than complex harmonic saturation or component modeling. [1, 2, 3]
    • The Case for Close but No Null: Many users argue that while stock EQs can get you "95% there", it is difficult to achieve a 100% true null. The VOG's specific interaction between the Amplitude and Frequency knobs has a highly customized, non-linear Q-behavior that is tricky to dial in manually on a basic parametric EQ. [1, 2, 3, 4]
    Alternatives
If you are looking to replicate the VOG’s workflow or function without the UAD DSP/native subscription, you can use specialized third-party alternatives like Boz Digital Labs Bark of Dog (a dedicated resonant high-pass filter), or dial in a low-cut/resonant-boost combo on your DAW's stock channel strip. [1, 2, 3, 4]
If you want to recreate this, tell me:
    • What DAW are you using?
    • What is the source material (e.g., kick drum, bass guitar, vocals)?

for my pov this is not bad, we need to debate and throw to the table the knowledge we have... 3 days ago i was so anti vog plugin... now i cant think it is snake oil... it is good at what it does, separate the elements if u configure them well... i hate to say it but VOG its a very good one. we need to be objetives. and thats why i place those audio files, its reality not an AP Mastering video xD with simple null test comparision which match this example.

yea but we can be a little "technical" lets say... cause i was used to LOVE NA BR, but to be honest... its not doing what i though... still lives in my tools but to be honest VOG is doing what it says.
