HELP! I'm trying to switch DAWs since I dont like the one that I was using as much anymore, and I got Cubase and it's great, just that two days ago I installed the R2R version of it and while installing the Library Manager, my whole computer started to lag like crazy, like moving my mouse was even sluggish, it didn't get fixed closing library manager, so I restarted my computer, and it didn't happen again until I did end up downloading Cubase, and when I opened an empty proyect, it started to lag again, so I had to restart and then I uninstalled Cubase. And just today I thought maybe this isn't an issue with the V.R version, so I installed that one, and it worked fine for a long time until it started lagging exactly the same again. I really enjoyed the time I managed to use Cubase (without the lag) and would like to fix this issue so I can keep using it :(

It would be greatly appreciated if anyone here could help me, and also before anyone asked my computer is fairly decent, it has a Ryzen 5 5500, 16 gigs of ddr4 ram and a GTX 1660 super, I hardly believe its a specs issue.

I’ve tried running Cubase 15 even on a Core2Quad from the late 2000s !!!), and it works without any major issues — the problem is definitely not your computer’s performance.

p.s. NEVER use V.R. releases — they’re always some kind of broken, sloppy hack, nowhere near the level of R2R

Hi, just in case anyone else encounters the same issue that I got, I manged to find the fix for it! it was the Windows option "Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling", in the configuration just go to Screen, then Graphics, then there is the option and turn it off and that will never happen again

Could it be the ASIO settings?
Do you use the same device with the same buffer settings and everything as the DAW before Cubase?
It definitely is not your computer. I even have a very similar specced notebook and all Cubendo versions run fine up to version 15.
Another thing could be the graphics driver. Newer Cubendos render a lot of the GUI on the gfx card.
So installing the latest AMD gfx drivers plus in your case the latest nvidia drivers is a good idea no matter what.
(the amd gfx because your notebook uses that to safe energy, you have to have both installed, even with an nvidia chip on that mainboard).

// edit // oh you found a fix, too late :D

// edit 2 // Usually that gpu scheduling option is a good thing.
I would update gfx drivers, turn it back on again and see what happens.
I always download the drivers from amd and nvidia directly, not from microsofts update service.

// edit 3// I'm just trying to replicate that and found that I don't have that option... although all windows 11 version have that and my gfx card should be modern enough to feature that.
strange. now I wonder if its always on or always off on my machine.

it's pretty funny when somebody disrespects a great Team like V.R's work like they are some kind of cracker. As if everyone doesn't know you are spouting off something you read in an 8 year old nfo file and have no idea what you are even talking about.

Yeah, actually recently I reinstalled Windows (I like doing that every couple of months) and I still found the same problem in Cubase (until I found the fix), I do always Download my drivers from Nvidia, although I like downloading the Game Ready Drivers since I also like gaming on my PC a bit, I don't know if that has anything to do with that but yeah, the Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling option is a bit hidden, I didn't mention that inside the Graphics config theres a drop down menu called Advanced graphics configuration where the option that i'm talking about appears, but yeah, quite weird you don't have that option, this graphics card is from 2019 after all lol

    Graphic cards/graphics processing unit (GPU)

Use the latest official Windows drivers provided, but do not install the additional software that comes with the driver! PhysX, GeForce Experience, AMD Settings (formerly Catalyst Control Center) are mostly game-related features not needed on a DAW. They consume extra CPU resources and may mess up the processing priorities to the disadvantage of audio real-time processing.

    Graphic card settings

Obviously, driver settings depend on the manufacturer, the graphics card model and the driver version. But as a rule, options that boost graphics/gaming performance can be suspected to interfere with real-time audio processing. If you have to use the additional software coming with the GPU, try whether switching off high/ultra-performance modes, overclocking, high-resolution textures/polygon/shader options etc. solves the issue. Restarts might be required and probably some trial and error efforts.

Some graphic cards like the NVIDIA Quadro series offers different profiles to work with. In rare cases, the default profile for the card caused performance issues. NVIDIA suggests trying the ‘Workstation App – dynamic streaming’ instead. The option can be found in the Nvidia 3D configuration options under <3D settings management> Also, if a ‘multi-threaded rendering’ option is available, turn that off as well!

Reminds me of the days I was pushing a 2006 Core 2 Duo MacBook to its limits with Minecraft mods… obviously not going back to a dark day like that because I have much better hardware and soon I’ll get to push an M5 MacBook to its limits instead!

Option is here: System > Display > Graphics \/ Advanced graphics settings

    gpuacc.jpg

Mine was enabled with no issues using Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti

I would also run Task Manager and click on the top of CPU column and see which is taking up most CPU usuage and do the same for Memory clicking on the top of that column until the highest is at the top

Also some once decent Firewalls can cause these issues like ZoneAlarm which used to be great but I'm pretty sure it caused lags later on after updating a long time ago.

I would run also run a test with latencymon.. usually problems can be created by having Wi-Fi running at the same time as creating music... I normally disable my network connection.

I also use Nvidia Studio Drivers instead of the Game Drivers even though on a rare occasion I can still play the odd game too with no issues.

Yeah, see it's not something thats just about opening Cubase, to me it has happened randomly, but when I had that option enabled most of the time opening for example, Groove Agent inside of Cubase or opening ANY of even the official Steinberg .exe installer would trigger it, other times it did happen randomly as I've said, even with just Cubase it self

Yes I had something similar happening once upon a time like I would open say C: drive and have to wait a minute before anything came up on screen or the mouse would lag too and jump around screen instead of going smoothly... I think that ended up being ZoneAlarm which I had used for decades before it played up after updating. As long as you're sorted anyway but just were some more suggestions to try as you have similar card to myself and I also use same DAW etc.

Yeah well thanks anyway, a bit unrelated but the Wi-Fi thing you mentioned made me think of using the Windows Firewall to block internet connections from Cubase and Mediabay, Cubase opens wayyyyy faster now :)
I will try some of the stuff you've mentioned, I would still like to get HAGS on because of the performance improvements, and it seems like Studio Drivers don't affect FPS that much (except for really new games which I don't play) so, I'll try them later and see if it can work better with Cubase :)

Not necessarily no... I went to the R2R steinberg crack because it just works better overall when you have a lot of steinberg apps installed. If you're running just a few steinberg apps (say 2 or three) V.R.'s unlocker should be fine for that.
