Most anything by Unfiltered Audio, BYOME (multi-FX) and Triad (multiband) especially though Sandman Pro (delay/pitch shift/buffer manipulator) is my favourite.

The modulation section is key with these, start adding all sorts of sequences in there (+a bit of slewed and synced noise) and things go sideways real quick.

Love2 by Dawesome is really awesome. Extraordinary flexibility and a large number of useful presets. It's on the sister site but it's not expensive at all, and Peter, the head honcho, responds immediately to enquiries.

I can give you a comprehensive list of effects that will mutate and distort the heck out of anything you put into it, and there’s a bunch of them that you can get access to free as well

    Polyverse Filterverse/Supermodal
Filterverse is just straight up crazy filters with effects that aren’t even filters included and has extensive modulation, Supermodal is somewhat simpler but is focused on modal filters for physical modeling effects

    VCV Rack/Cardinal Rack
Eurorack emulation with tons of software only modules, hardware modules turned plugins and infinite combinations… probably the best thing I can recommend but it has a learning curve and has premium modules and a pro version which unlocks the ability to use Rack as a vst plugin, but you can start with the Cardinal rack as it’s free, also can be used as a plugin with no purchase needed and has a smaller selection of modules that can help you find all the greats as it has a “best-of” library… learn the right modules and get creative, but I will start and leave you off here by recommending using the Marbles module to modulate the Clouds module and basically make chaos…

    Reaktor Molekular
Honestly I can’t fully describe it because it’s so unusual sometimes but has enough warping potential for almost any whatever you’ll use it for. Requires Native Instruments Reaktor but maybe it might work with the free player version. There’s plenty of Reaktor stuff out there but I’m unaware of everything and there’s plenty of instruments too, you can further explore the possibilities later

    Unfiltered Audio
Basically almost all their effects; BYOME, SpecOps, Triad, Dent, Fault, Silo, Lofi AF, they can seriously screw up whatever you put into them and turn them into something different or just distort into oblivion…

    Dawesome Love 2/Hate
Love us granular, Hate is wavetable distortion, they all have multi effects and work very well to mangle audio, especially Hate, you can think of these two as like a good and evil twins

    Lese Smear
Basically the premier spectral effect outside of Evan’s plugdata stuff, you can really shape your sound in new ways and I will also recommend Codec, one of their free effects, it can just degrade anything into dust or gently compress into the sounds of low quality mp3 …

    Inear Display
Their plugins recently went free, so you get a bunch of interesting glitchy effects and instruments for making distortions or corrupting more traditional music… grab all the plugins and you’ll be much better off than if you only have a couple or just the effects

    Glitchmachines
Couple of their plugins are very good for mangling and mutating and they have a couple freebies but their bigger monsters like Cryogen or Fracture are good options… there’s some sample based ones but I don’t really go for those

    Lunacy Beam
Mix and match nodes and create complex parallel chains, I personally have everything from last year to now but there are some options that are more “ambient” than “chaotic”, but nodes you can unlock as separate purchases like the Volt distortion, Taps & Portals delay and Bismuth resonator add more options for crazy parallel processing chains

    Exp Dsp Filtertable
Creative filtering with a wealth of resonances, you can make physical modeling kinds of resonators or sculpt with interesting filters, there is a demo available but the full version is worth the upgrade

    2Rule
They made a bunch of cool free plugins like the recently released TugPhonon which goes beyond the emulation of a classic tape effect and have another spectral image to filter effect and more

    Sugar Bytes Transfigure
More creative spectral effects and resynthesis plus modulation and some extra effects

    Aberrant DSP Digitalis/Cataclysm
More bitcrushing/compression/degradation but has a new partner for more distortions and other sound shaping anomalies

    Baby Audio Transit 2
Crazy multi effects with multiple ways to transition and is great for live performance since it’s basically transition effects material gone beyond into the depths of the unknown

    Zynaptiq
Will recommend Morph 3 and Wormhole here as they offer the most out-there effects from the developer and you can combine two signals and make hybrid monsters or other effects, plus Wormhole is great for voices and makes a good stage to put in before Morph!

    Minimal Audio
They have some interesting effects, for more creative destruction there’s Rift and Evoke, which the latter is made for vocals but can work on anything else too, things like Wave Shifter, Ripple Phaser and more and they have internal modulation for more dynamic and moving effects

    JMG Cyberdrive
Ridiculous distortion multi effects with many different kinds and some additional effect types for sculpting or giving the signal different flavors in case you want to play with feedback, as it has a feedback section too

    Beatsurfing CHEat Code
Pick four effects modules, add movement and watch the evolution happen… good for anything between subtle shifting to more extreme corruption and more

    BLEASS Tides
Creative delay with multiple effects going into the feedback signal, play feedback and watch the tides crash upon your audio beach…

    Dillon Bastan M4L Devices
There’s some effects in the roster, but something like Nirvana lets you explore more feedback and there’s things like granular effects, unusual sound generators and various nature inspired anomalies worth checking out, plus some evolving devices like Natural Selection that can grow into new patches and can work with existing Ableton devices and presets. You might need a higher tier of Ableton to get the most of these but I would imagine they’d work in Live Standard at the minimum

Good luck escaping the rabbit hole I just dropped you down, you’ll have to find your own way out of the distortions!

    Oops, before I forget…

it’s not a plugin but it’s insane… even Aphex Twin used it!

    Composer’s Desktop Project/SoundThread
Input a sample, play with the crazy processors and out comes what the heck is that!? The SoundThread interface makes it much easier to get around these tools and there are some generators if you don’t want to use a sample, makes for some unusual monsters and can potentially be distorted to oblivion so it’s best to put on a limiter at the end

Please use spoiler tags for ai ChatGPT comments - and/or bold notices at the top prefacing commentary, allowing other members to decide if they want to read or skip it.

I did not use any artificial intelligence, I typed it all by hand. If I would’ve used sloppy ai I wouldn’t have used it here. Can I go back and edit to add a spoiler?

You can, but don't. A) pot, kettle black. b) too lazy to check if AI written. by reading it or:
it does not read like typical AI-generated text.

A few things point toward a human enthusiast writing off the top of their head:

    • It's uneven. AI tends to be more structured and consistent. This jumps between detailed explanations, personal opinions, side comments, and incomplete thoughts.
    • There are grammar issues and typos that don't look deliberate:
      • "Love us granular"
      • "play feedback and watch the tides crash upon your audio beach"
      • "almost any whatever you'll use it for"
      • inconsistent capitalization and punctuation throughout.
    • The recommendations feel experience-driven rather than scraped from marketing descriptions. Things like:
      • recommending Marbles modulating Clouds in VCV Rack
      • specifically calling out Volt, Taps & Portals, and Bismuth in Beam
      • mentioning TugGlicento/TugPhonon and obscure spectral plugins
      • suggesting Wormhole before Morph in a chain
    • The author clearly has a bias toward experimental sound design and keeps drifting into personal preference ("I personally have everything...", "I don't really go for those", "Honestly I can't fully describe it...").
One thing that could make someone suspicious is the sheer length and the fact it's a giant categorized list. AI often produces lists like this. But audio nerds on forums absolutely do this too, especially when somebody asks "what are the craziest plugins for mangling audio?"

The strongest evidence against AI is actually the messiness. AI usually tries to explain every item in a similar format. This writer gets excited about some plugins, barely explains others, goes off on tangents, and occasionally writes sentences that are awkward enough that most AI models wouldn't naturally produce them.

If I had to put a number on it, I'd say something like:

    • 70–80% chance human-written.
    • 15–25% chance human-written with AI assistance (maybe cleanup or expansion). <- no rule against cleanup for grammar and spelling.
    • 5% or less chance it was generated entirely by AI and pasted without editing.
It reads a lot like a knowledgeable forum user who spends way too much time collecting weird audio plugins. The plugin selection itself is also unusually niche and current, which is something I'd expect from a real sound-design enthusiast rather than a generic AI response.

I've used effectrix, looperator, infiltrator and some other FX strips in the past. Infiltrator is probably the most versatile, but some of its FX, like the pitch shifting, are pretty garbage. So it really depends on what you're trying to achieve. Also, don't forget the classic: https://illformed.com
Which is still unique in its own way.
