Pop Star in Rio de Janeiro

Shakira Gives Free Concert to Millions (May 3, 2026)

Copacabana is a "magical place" for her, says Shakira: Now the pop singer has given what was probably the biggest concert of her career on the world-famous beach. An estimated two million fans celebrated her greatest hits.

Pop singer Shakira thrilled millions with a free concert in Rio de Janeiro. The 49-year-old performed on Saturday evening on the legendary Copacabana beach. The city administration estimated the attendance at two million people. "I will never forget this performance," said the singer after the nearly two-and-a-half-hour show. The concert had been billed as the biggest of her career.

Rio Attracts World Stars with Concert Series

The concert was part of a series under the motto "Todo Mundo no Rio" (Everyone in Rio), with which the city administration brings international stars to the metropolis. Last year, pop star Lady Gaga set a world record for a single concert in Rio with around 2.5 million attendees. In 2024, Madonna performed for approximately 1.6 million fans. Shakira performed some of her biggest hits in Rio, including songs like "Waka Waka," "Whenever, Wherever," and "Hips Don't Lie." The Colombian singer had previously spoken of her connection to Brazil, calling Copacabana "a dream" and a "magical place." She has performed in the South American country frequently since 1996 and is also fluent in Portuguese.

    Eleven Concerts Planned in Madrid

Shakira has more major events planned for this year. In September and October, the Grammy and Latin Grammy-winning artist is scheduled for eleven concerts in Madrid. More than half a million tickets for the concerts were sold within a few hours.

It would be interesting to know how they set up the PA system for such a huge space.

Word of mouth from first rows. Cheap as fuck.
It's true with so many people there'd be a slight "delay" of like half an hour. But hey, you can't have it all

They probably distributed bluetooth speakers every ten rows or so.

    It was fine.

For the mega-concert, the organization has set up the largest stage in the project's history: 1,500 square meters of stage, with a 680-square-meter LED screen, a 25-meter catwalk that will bring the Colombian artist closer to the audience, and a height of 2.20 meters above the sand to improve visibility. In addition, 16 sound and video towers will be installed along the beach, each with 45-square-meter LED screens. In terms of security, the authorities will not hold back.

Insisting on being ignorant (on a music forum no less) is not the flex you think it is.

I was wondering about security for an event of that size. I mean the sheer mass of people... kinda scary if you ask me.

700k actually. It's impossible to fit more people than this in that area. They always lie about this, to make events look bigger...You know, Rio...

Such difference? Wow it's the same with public protests here. Organizers say 4 million, police says 1 million
    Can it handle 4k?

Security in Rio (or elsewhere in Brazil) is not expected in a way the Western World would imagine.
They have carnival, New Year's Eve, other mega concerts there every year.
Local people know their odds when they go out.
Tourists don't know how to minimise their risk.

I imagine in that case many foreigners from South America travelled there for the show.

There is very little entertainment wise that would cause me to have to endure the literal shit environment waiting to be experienced at one of those completely horrid "mega" type events... Like atomic war aftermath conditions exist at those things which even in youth I never patronized or participated in. Had the opportunity (if one wants to call it that) more than once to participate in events of this kind (albeit smaller scales but still) and flatly turned it down in 2 seconds. :suicide:

While Shakira performed in numerous concerts, many haters still beg audio-warez to create music.. Isn’t that amusing? At the very least, they should be humble or simply be quiet. I may not be a fan of her music, but I do respect her as an artist. Despite her voice quality and other shortcomings, She made her way to become a renowned star.

Please. Lies, lies, lies. One million people means there were 1,000 rows (depth) of 1,000 people (width). I've been on that beach many times. It does not hold 1,000 people in width, and 1,000 rows deep (down the beach) is nowhere near what the photos even hint at.

Also, imagine 1,000,000 men and women (and some kids/teens too) all having to pee (let's say just one time all evening for gender fairness's sake), and try to imagine the number of toilets, and the lines at said toilets - assuming all are/remain fully functional.

Last but not least, there's hotel room capacity. I was in Rio once during a Semana Santa (Easter week I think). You cannot imagine the hotel room situation there, but for reference:
    • "Rio de Janeiro concentrates 609 hospitality establishments, totaling 38,565 rooms with capacity to accommodate about 83,130 visitors."
    • "A total of 964 hotels with a capacity to serve 62,853 guests is the sum of the hotel availability near Rio in municipalities such as Teresópolis, Petrópolis and the members of the Região dos Lagos."

As you can see, the math ain't mathin'. There's marketing (and politics), and then there's reality. Don't buy or fall for the former.
