I flinch regularly with the word 'better'. Anyone who can really sing and has their own unique sound that is instantly recognizable, I do not believe can be compared with someone else who does not sound identical. It's great to have a personal like and personal opinion but that's all it is.

So many great singers in History both male and female. There are also singers who have mastered vocal harmonics that can sing three notes at once in realtime which is something else again. As great as they are and I could easily name a couple that can do things none of the listed singers can, I still would not call them 'better', just different.

Comparing Mercury, Plant, Ripperton, Carey, Franklin, Aguilira, Sting, Pavarotti, Kiri TeKanawa, Perry, Hathaway, Gabriel, McDonald, Loggins... and everyone else that is in the too many to list region that can really sing, honestly, I can't compare any of them. They all made a great contribution to their genres/styles.
The below lady has a huge range and can do things many cannot but I still would only call her different to the rest as great as she is.

I and everyone else forgot the guy that blows me away every time I listen to him, Jeff Buckley. He sang as an angel with seemingly no effort, and while listening to a concoction of different live performances yesterday in an album called Mystery White Boy thought to myself that nobody if anybody could touch him for the pure joy that tactiley emanated from his soul while performing in front of an audience. His voice would roar and soar high into the stratosphere free of the draw of gravity as he sang those now iconic melodies to audiences that were entranced by his very being live while gifted to witness his high art. I get shivers to think that he only produced one single album before his brightest of flames was cruelly extinguished. And damn, he was a great guitarist too!!

These are live performances which highlight his most potent abilities as one of our greatest musical artists.

 

Totally agree! Jeff blew my mind when I was introduced to Grace in the late 90ies. One of the greatest voices ever, and one of the greatest talents of the 90ies!
