I might try it. I installed 5.1 last night and it ran slick. What I really want, mainly, is access to the Steinberg Vocoder, and secondarily, the 3 synths. I'll have to route MIDI and AUDIO between it and Studio One. Should be doable. One of the Cubase 5.1s floating around has a good eLicenser dongle emulator, and the vst's, and a one thing does all installer. I may also try to load Groove Agent 3, a long standing "need". Don't know if the eLicenser will enable it or not.

Annoying update talking to myself. I can get x86 Steinberg Vocoder.dll to run in jBridged (to x64) x86 IL MiniHost. The GUI is the generic. I can hear that I am affecting the sound. It seems to be working as expected. But in 30-60 seconds, it craps out, and crashes (IL MiniHost) in this setup.

Back to plan A - wiring audio between the hosts / DAWs.

Nice bonus - there are a couple of digital synths in yee olde Cubase 5.1 that also are not usable in the outside world, that MAY turn out useful as carriers. Also, maybe it will lead to originality.

Before the big wave, Santa brought you some nice retro toys.
Some are never released before, some are fixed or optimized for latest Windows OS, some are strongly protected.

Since you have much faster computer than 20 years ago, try running those legacy under higher sampling rate (96kHz or above) and rediscover your hidden gems (if plugin supports that rate), the difference is like night and day.

We tested our release under latest build of Windows 10 x64. Some legacy use depricated function from old VSTSDK. If you can't get working correctly in your hosts, try wrapper or bridge like PatchWork, MetaPlugin, jBridge etc. MetaPlugin also have oversampling option to run those legacy in higher sampling rate.

The A1 is the standard synthesizer in the Steinberg sequencers Cubase and Nuendo. It was programmed by Waldorf and therefore sounds good. It almost achieves the quality of a Micro-Q, but is far less equipped.

Manuel Schleis – freelance sound programmer for Waldorf – did his best to program a trance set. So we're excited to see what he can get out of the A1...

The soundset comes in a plastic case with a CD embedded in it. I would think: It would almost be a waste for a 43 kB bank if it weren't for the numerous sound sets and operating systems for Waldorf hardware that fill up the CD a little. The set consisting of 128 single sounds offers everything from basses, leads to pads and effect sounds. But what should you expect from such a simple synthesizer? Two oscillators, a filter, an LFO and two envelopes? Well, these are trance sounds, you should be able to achieve them with what you have ;o)) In order to overcome the simplicity of the A1, in addition to the actual soundset, there is also a Cubase project that is equipped with five A1ses and that's it has EQ and effect settings, so that the young trancer only needs a drum machine to party in the children's room with the light organ and the laser pointer ;o).

All sounds are programmed perfectly and utilize the A1 right down to the last parameter. The FX sounds and the leads are the best, while the pads fall off quite a bit. The bass can also be convincing with additional EQ. The sounds are relatively current and can unfold well if used correctly.

Sound example

You can get an idea of the sounds using a small, unmixed trance demo. Only sounds from the A1 and drums from a sampler were used. The effects are recruited from the standard Cubase effects. EQ was hardly used at all, just reverb, autopanner and delay. The sum went through a Waves L1. You can clearly hear the Waldorf-like sound character of the A1.

Conclusion

The soundset doesn't turn the A1 into a JP8000 or a virus, but it gets the most out of the A1 to sound similar. Many sounds are really successful and spontaneously inspiring! This sounds set should be particularly interesting for beginners, as you can easily see how the sounds are structured on the A1. Simply stepping through the sounds is fun to find the right sound. A lot of things can be enhanced with the help of the Cubase effects, especially delay and reverb should not be missing in most sounds, as the A1 only has a chorus/flanger integrated. It's a shame that no real, fully produced song is included in the Cubase project, because that could showcase the sounds really well.

What are the dates on those files if it shows them as modified at the time those files were initially made? It could be later or they could be available with 5.1

 

So Spector is just parts of Tera or are they effectively the same architecture? Is this “formanTERA” and etc. part of the Tera installation or plugin or do I have to look for separate plugins I haven’t heard about until now?

 

I feel more supprised othere's weren't aware Cubase 5.1 works great on windows 10.

I was using il form all my projects till last years big steinburg sale, where I bought version 13.

I've still got version 5 on the laptop.
It's better then basic and is lighter then most new light DAW, even if that's not what was intended when they made it.

 

I still have Cubase 5 (& 6.5) in my main PC along with Cubase 15, all of them running on Windows 11.

I still can open old projects with the most recent version of Cubase (15 as of today), but sometimes there may be something missing or only available on older Cubase programs, so I keep the old Cubases installed too, and if I can, I also take the chance to adapt/update my old projects to the current Cubase version so I don't need the old programs.
For example, there is an effect I used frequently before and that now I can't make it work or find a replacement for, which is Tonic plug in effect from Steinberg:

I keep forgetting Steinberg started the numbering over when it was rebranded 'SX'. I swear, every time I see people say Cubase 5 my brain immediately goes to the last version of Cubase VST32 released heh.

Yeah I found it while looking for old cubase plugins in case someone made a more interesting instrument available for every workstation, other than what I have saved already the only thing of interest to me was Monologue and that I didn’t need because there’s plenty of subtractive synthesis… really I’m hoping that the overdrive has the “Brit Drums” patch or if it’s only in newer versions of the included cubase overdrive

 

Think the bouncing realization of the timpani monsters helps make that date make sense, I will have to check if the sample I’m thinking of is inside that pack

I might be missing something here but I don't get why you would bother with a version of Cubase released 17 years ago instead of one of the latest?

 

In case you have an older project from years ago and want to either migrate it to a new version or finish it or back it up before progress is lost. Plus there’s also novelty in using older versions sometimes, the old hardware will have an easier time working with something from when it was newer for the time than something from today which might be incompatible.
