It is very hard to know what SOURCE format Spotify (and others) have on their platform.
Especially with their early files.

A good test would be to take an old track, present since day one on streaming platform, record it digitally with a premium account "Lossless" and trying to "null test" it against a CD/WAV source.

We will get some surprises ...

 

There are only two possibilities: Either you can hear a difference or you can't. A listening test is scientific, not spiritual, religious or whatever else.
If you can't hear a difference, it doesn't mean there isn't one. But obviously it doesn't matter when listening to music on Spotify, YouTube, or any other streaming service.

 

That's why i use MP3 192 VBR "on the go". Too much noise outside to need lossless

Wrong. If it can't be measured IT DOES NOT EXIST. Hearing is interpretation of the brain, there is no "subconscious" hearing. There is only interpretation, false or not can not be measured or proven. So: It's subjectively, objectively NOT THERE. Tonal Balance or Span are objectively. Not your "ears"/brain. So: do not only listen with your ears, check with your eyes.

I've listened to music from cassette recorders, the radio, tapes, record players with speakers, stereo systems, live concert music, car radios, MP3 players, Walkmans, and the internet like YouTube, Spotify, and my DAW. However, I've never once thought of visualizing it; I've simply listened, because that's what my ears are for.
