For sure this is something I probably should have done a lot sooner! I'll be creating a full video walkthrough shortly!

I encourage you to go ahead and leave the most putrid review of your life. Absolutely valid. (And probably would be more beneficial in terms of getting people talking) The goal is eyeballs not flattery. :winker:

The actual reason is that I just haven't got around to making a proper video yet.. You give me too much credit

I've been busy finishing the manual: https://lusidmusicuk.com/pages/buzzcut-erosion-clipper-manual

Absolutely. When I started the project (my first VST plugin) my thought was "let me just go ahead and make something extremely complex that I probably won't be able to finish".

Yes clippers are relatively easy to code. But they're still invaluable and I truly believe mine is "the best one" for many different reasons.

    I love this.
You do it then. See how far you get. lol

Your clipper is terrible! I compared it to PristinePeaks and FirComp2 and it distorts a lot! This is the worst compressor I've ever used!!! It doesn't even have attack or release controls...

This is very useful information. I had no idea anyone would think like this! I guess I'll need to add something soon.

Im really loving buzzcut, no hype. The neuro type examples i posted show how awesome it is for that sort of thing. Its not the same as injecting white noise as an oscillator. Idk the exact math or theories as to why, but the sound of the noise injection into the clipper is much more grimey and nasty than injecting it as an oscillator and then clipping.

im also starting to hear how it can be powerful in mastering in subtle doses. Of course I wouldn't reach for this for a singer-songwriter folk song, but for heavy electronic music, and i would imagine also rock, boom-bap etc, its sounding great.

White noise used in dither is extremely low amplitude and there to prevent quantization distortion. A noise oscillator in a synth is an audible sound source, so those two things aren’t really comparable.

What I’m hearing isn’t noise interacting with the signal, it sounds like a layer sitting on top of it. There’s a difference. If noise is part of the clipping stage, it should change the character of the distortion. This sounds more like a constant noise film over the whole signal.

At that point it’s no different than throwing a distortion preset on in Serum2’s FX rack. Honestly it sounds better as a straight clipper with little to no added noise.

100%! I designed it for what I wanted as a drum and bass producer. A mastering clipper / destruction tool.

The reason it doesn't sound the same as just adding noise to the signal is because "there is no noise being added to the signal".
Only audio rate modulation of the clipping threshold. The "nastiness" your hearing is primarily because the fundamental bass frequencies are most of what is being "bitten" in a sense. This makes them audible in the high frequencies. Ie. grimey nastiness

Do you mid if I grab an A/B comparison from those files you sent? I'm working on an audio player for the landing page at the moment

They are comparable. Aliasing occurs only when clipping occurs, erosion destabilizes the static sine waves responsible and can mask when set appropriately.
Click on the "Buzz Thresholds" for an explanation:

There is no noise being added. Only modulation of the clipping ceiling. The only way to make it sound like "a constant noise film over the whole signal" is to really overdo the buzz threshold or use the inverted mode.

This is totally source dependent. If you're pushing bass music to -3LUFS and want to retain stereo depth while potentially having like 12dB of gain reduction, erosion clipping will likely sound better because you're maintaining stereo width, enhancing audibility of fundamental bass frequencies and mask aliasing when it occurs. That's ignoring the exponential soft clipping too.

It's a tool. It's up to you to make it sound good.
