I've never heard the timba track so I trusted it was yours. but it does work.

 

I think it sounds pretty good, but I'm still struggling with the mixdown and mastering, I don't have much experience with that. A while ago I couldn't finish anything, I kept getting stuck in an 8 bar loop, but I've learned to finish as many tracks as possible, even if they don't all sound equally good, because if I hang around for too long and keep repeating parts of the track, it quickly gets boring, so you have to put something down as quickly as possible.

 

This started as a love song, then it got twisted. My inspiration stems from NDW, eastern block melancholic post punk and a comic I read as a teenager about the pure all consuming evil, that somehow manifested on a spaceship, ready to infest the world. The story goes, that as soon as the spaceship lands, pure evil will infest the worlds, with no way to stop it. The evil even lures the pilot with visions of might, making fun of the human existence, before all ends. It seems hopeless, you get drawn into a situation with no escape and no power. Not only my young mind was suprised by what happend next, but the demon in the story as well. The pilot chose not to land the ship, but rather to self destruct. Finding a way to steer the fate of everything on their own terms. And the pilot was a women, I think it wouldn’t and shouldn’t have mattered which gender was the saviour, but it somehow did.

On a serious note, in many aspects women are systematically in a position of less power. A song won‘t change that, but the notion of hope rather than the lack thereoff goes a long way. It does not have to be a singular action to solve inequality of chances, but a vision of a better togetherness carried by the many will be as good as, maybe even better.

Ha, I made it!

After researching Tamayo's Women Reaching For The Moon I did my best to disavowal any ideas or inticacies that might have filtered into my mind and to create my own scenario without those scholarly references, to focus solely on the image itself to inform my going forward to tackle this 18th iteration of our Friendly Non-Contest. It was harder than I thought and found that I had capitulated to a few of those references and surrendered to the adage of no man is an island.

Gazing at the painting and letting my mind wander I envisioned Gabriel García Márquez being wholly influenced in his novels, the magic, the mystery and his foundation and as a champion in the struggles of woman's empowerment. I then decided to do my best to pen something that Marquez might not hate, a poem that speaks of the the sacred power of the feminine and the physical representation of that power, The Moon which holds sway in the rhythm of our planet as well as our own bodies and especially the 28 day cycle which empowers the continuation of our human species.

I saw in the painting an older woman who in freedom and strength wisely holds "the wisdom of the crone*" mentoring a young maiden in the ways of old to embody that great responsibility, in wisdom and as a repository of all who have come before and as a gateway to those yet to come.

Under my poem I tinkled and tickled on the piano hoping to conjure something akin to starlight. Then I created a short paean to Luna, The Moon to regal in her potency and radiate our collective love for her natural works. I used samples that I have collected over the years of various night sounds and the howls of canines to embolden a sense of night and played a few what I believe are Thai flutes that I picked up at a thrift store years ago though never had used in a piece of mine which I feel came out with good effect.

I originally wanted Grape Ape's lady friend to read the poem but he went underground and never got back to me, so I asked my daughter but she's loaded down with an incredible workload reading and reading and then reading some more for her university classes, plus she has an important performance thing this weekend with her figure skating club and I didn't want to take away her focus on that. I got her to do sit for a short while yesterday afternoon but I didn't produce her very well and didn't really give her the full story to make informed decisions on the delivery. She did a few takes and I tried to edit it to make it work but to no avail. I wound up doing it myself which I'm actually glad about because I thought of doing the piano part only afterwards to make up for the fact that it should have been a woman doing it. The piano as a yang instrument to balance out my dude-ness, LOL. I erased what I thought was the keeper and played the piano part to help the poem be more rhythmic. Then I read the poem sort of in time with the music.

 

Aww man, I think I won't make it. Haven't been able to work on my own music lately. I see it ends by the last minute of the day, but at which time zone? PST?
