Serum 2 has basically four oscillators, one sub, three wavetables, and one noise, so you can create the punch in the first, then the tail or crunch in the second or third. You can route two oscillators to two separate buses and treat them separately. Then you can route both buses through the main again for even more processing, or send the first or second bus to direct out, or both buses and if you want you can load a 909 sample into one of the oscillators.
That's why Serum 2 is so powerful.

Well, yesterday I spent 15 minutes delving into a hardcore kick. I tried Drumazon 2 Sonicsweep with a standard preset, and I can tell you, you can get pretty far. After that, I added Omnicide and Camelcrusher, and it sounded even better. So, I think you can make a pretty good gabber kick with these plugins if you spend some time on it.

Did you compare Sonic Sweep with their Rave Distortion2 plugin, and stack them? Not to suggest that presets are everything, but Sonic Sweep 2 has 15 presets that specify they are for 909 use in the filenames. RD2 has about 50 of them.

Yes, manually with a Mackie or other mixer.

Thank you so much for all the comments, replies, and ideas. I've been experimenting and I've realized that you have to play with different EQ>DISTO chains to adjust the EQ or filter /phase and create resonances at each layer level. And find the sound you like, because small variations in the EQ can completely change the sound. Any plugin or way to use it would be greatly appreciated.

You could probably make a wavetable of the TR909 kick and snare channel tonal/harmonic aspect in Serum, but you definitely cannot make it with just a pitch bent sine and some distortion. that's not how that part of the circuit works. it's more like a triangle wave that adjusts its slewrate depending on pitch or in this case the control voltage, with some amp stages between. if you have ever used an actual 909 or a clone of one and looked at the waveform in realtime, you can kind of see this shifting slewrate in how the angle changes on the pitch descent. it's not just more squashed together, its actually more angular at higher pitches than lower pitches. in some revisions there is more filtering after the fact so it can tend to look more like its built from a sine or something sine like, but this is mostly occurring after most of the synthesis is done. the core oscillator itself is more akin to a triangle wave, but even that is not entirely accurate

Serum 2 had a sampler oscillator type added to it. It's no different than loading a sample into a classic sampler, but you get all of the other available features of Serum to go with your 909 sample. You can even use a second oscillator for an actual wavetable and blend them together. There are pros and cons for each oscillator type, but you are not stuck with the old workarounds for using only a wavetable.
After that, wether you want to fire up a 909 from Mars sample, Goldbaby 909s, kb6, etc is up to you. There are thousands of good ones.
Any of this is already deeper than the amount of synthesis effort involved in getting a kick out of a 909.

    Synsonic Instruments BD-909

The BD-909 is a recreation of the bass drum from the classic Roland TR-909 drum machine, which can certainly be considered a genre standard in many electronic music styles, especially in early techno productions. According to the developer, Synsonic Instruments, the original's circuitry was analyzed and accurately replicated for the plug-in. While we haven't done a direct comparison, the BD-909 definitely sounds good and has the typical

TR-909 character with plenty of punch. The sound generation has been enhanced with several useful parameters, making the BD-909 more sonically flexible than its predecessor. The pitch can be adjusted up and down over a range of 12 semitones, enabling both sub-basses and toms. With the keyboard button activated, the sound can also be played chromatically via a keyboard, allowing for bass lines or differently tuned toms. The pitch can be modulated via a fast envelope with an adjustable decay time.

Attack controls the volume of an additional click sound, and the length of the noise signal is also adjustable. Accent controls the dynamics, and this parameter can also be controlled via velocity. The other parameters can be remotely controlled via DAW automation or a controller, and a MIDI learn function is built in. An adjustable distortion effect adds saturation and more aggressive sounds. You can save your own creations via the integrated preset menu.

    Conclusion
The BD-909 is an easy-to-use and great-sounding emulation of the TR-909 bass drum, complemented by some useful additional features such as distortion and chromatic playing for toms and bass lines.

Distortion again and you'll have a decent starting point.

    Highly controlled 'noise' ;)

Drumazon 2 sounds like a real 909 to me (correct me if I'm wrong). You can also tune the kick to a specific key. I tried that yesterday. I tuned the kick to the key of G, and it sounded pretty good with Sonicsweep, Ohmicide, and Camelchrusher. I didn't even use EQ between the distortions.

I also played around a bit with the order of the plugins: first sonic sweep, then ohmicide after sonic sweep, then ohmicide before sonic sweep, that works well too, and finally camelcrusher.
Just play with the order of the plugins, that can also produce good results.

...I've no idea what that means, it was just a tune I just listened to as this thread inspired me to fish out some old gabber. Apologies to any Dutch speakers.

Yes, but most of us coudln't afford the original.
Is there some Behringi.vst3 out there? :bleh:

//edit// but thanks for bringing that thing up, I didn't know that one existed.
I often just wanted to have my old mixer back to go mad on the gain dial, if that thing
sounds as I hope it does, that would be awesme!

oh, another thing: some guys used amiga trackers.
there is a sampler vst that emulates the sound of amiga converters, I forgot the name though.
But as far as I remember some were mad enough to overshoot the input of the parallel port sampler.
You know, these little crappy parallel port dongles.
Ah... what an innocent and fun time. (when you forgot about the problems you had back then and only remember the good times )[IMG]

Been producing hardcore since 1998, and first I'd say that the 909 is definitely the staple for an old school hardcore/gabba kick.

But it can really go from barely saturated (to subtly accentuate that lovely "3D" punch the 909 is known for), to totally obliterated.

Recently I have achieved decent results with the 909 vsti (the actual Roland one) and a few distortion fx.
, try different distos, make your own sound.

Then you can go funky, double it, filter/split the low end and get creative with the mid/highs (phaser, bitcrushers, etc..)

And yeah, I'm old school myself.
